Book Description

0971567603 978-0971567603 February 19, 2002
This book is an historical novel that takes place in the first century A.D. during the Roman occupation of Judea. The author introduces a remarkable theory postulating a heavy and direct Roman involvement in the formation of the early Christian movement. The perspective is realistic and representative of the people and times. Every word and page in this novel builds towards an amazing climax of one of the most important and potentially misunderstood events in the history of the world. The proposed theory is well formed - intrinsically supported by a flood of revealing evidence in the epilogue and footnotes throughout the book. "The Unspoken Power of Rome" sheds new light on the early days of Christianity and the motivation behind its beginning.

Review

...fascinating theory about Jesus ...turns Christianity on its ear ...extremely readable novel, so accessible, so compelling, an entertaining read. -- Crosswinds Weekly, Oct 31 - Nov 7, 2002, Albuquerque, NM

About the Author

Barry Benning was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1956. He was raised in the Protestant faith of the Christian Church. His mother was Baptist and his father Methodist. The distinction meant little to him until emphasis brought to bear by older relatives when he was in his teens. After graduating from college Mr. Benning developed strong interest in the origins of Christianity, Judaism and the written sources of the New Testament. His studies included the beginnings of the different sects of Christianity, including Roman Catholic Tradition and its history. Of particular interest was the succession of perceived authority in interpreting and disseminating supernatural truth, and how it was handed down from the time of Jesus Christ. "The Unspoken Power of Rome" is a culmination of these studies and Barry Benning's first novel. Mr. Benning graduated from Columbia University in New York City with a Master of Science and from the United States Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science.

1.0 out of 5 stars A spark of an idea turned into a bad novel, March 9, 2006

This review is from: The Unspoken Power of Rome (Hardcover)
While the rough outline of this far-out idea may have made for an interesting novel in the hands of an experienced and accomplished writer, the final product here falls short by a wide margin. Without arguing any theological, or even logical, points, suffice it to say that this book is the most poorly written novel I have ever had the great displeasure to read. Word usage is often incorrect, the narrative is not fluid and the imagery is reminiscent of a high school term paper. Who edited this book, anyway?

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazon Review by Marc Sadowski, October 28, 2006
This review is from: The Unspoken Power of Rome (Hardcover)
Sweet Jesus! No pun intended...or is it? This book was quite the read, and it's nothing what I though it would be. I was expecting this book to resemble Gladiator. Instead, I was treated to some good, creative alternate history action. But even the phrase alternate history is not an appropriate word to describe this novel on the Roman's sway in early Christianity. It has to be one of those books that you have to read to truly appreciate. Benning writes this in what I like to refer to as a genre-less genre - which means that you don't need to associate this book with any genre to truly like it. Just be ready for it. You might learn something!
