Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Diana Winchester had tried to rationalize her parents' behavior, but deep down she knew they had always treated her better than her adopted younger sister, Amy, who responded by resorting to drugs, alcohol and, finally, prostitution. Diana had attempted to counteract their inattention and tended to be overprotective of her younger sibling, but ultimately realizes that if Amy is to survive her self-destructive course, she needs the support of a loving family, and that the logical solution is to find Amy's birth mother. Desperate to save the sister she adores, Diana locates the mother, then travels to Jackson Hole in Wyoming to confront her. Nothing could have prepared her for the hostility of Amy's birth mother, a mean-spirited woman who has no regrets about giving away her child nor any wish to see her again. All seems lost until Amy's handsome 'new' brother shows up and offers Diana his support and eventually romance. Bockoven's well-charted heart-wrencher is sensitively depicted and thought-provoking.

5.0 out of 5 stars as usual with Bockoven, a touching, real-life romance, August 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: An Unspoken Promise (Mass Market Paperback)
It may be that the real-life aspects of this work do not apply to adoption cases, but a more key theme here is romance. That is what this book is supposed to be, after all. In that it deals at all with this vexing issue, in the context of a romance, I think it does quite well.

Just as I said for 'The Way it Should Have Been' Georgia Bockoven weaves a truly moving romantic story that has much better ties with real life than usual romance work. To me, her books are the kind you cannot put down.

Life isn't the fairytale many romance novels make it out to be. However, Bockoven does not abandon the fairy tale romance so much as she just incorporates a bit more reality than many writers do. The result is still an escape from everyday life in some ways, but at the same time the story reminds you of both the bad and the good in your own.

Most of all, every one of her stories is about the power of love. Not the fairy tale swept off your feet romance love. Nope. The real kind. The kind that makes you want to share your life, your soul, with someone for the rest of your life.

I've noticed that this kind of love is in shorter supply these days, I'll grant you that. But I've also seen that it still exists. So, just as the pain she writes about exists, so too does the magical wonder of true love.

Excellent book, must read.

2.0 out of 5 stars great situation poor execution, July 1, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: An Unspoken Promise (Mass Market Paperback)
I was an adopted child and the premise of this book intrigued me but Ms Bockoven was only interested in using the adoption as a device to get the romance going. The reunions between family memebrs were poor if not omitted completely. But there was plenty of grandstanding by all characters and no lack of sexual tension betwwen the adoptee's natural brother and adopted sister. Please concentrate on what makes a story unique in the future instead of the same tired plot points.

This is a beautiful story of two sisters and the distinctly different paths taken in their lives held together only by family ties.
Ties that won't be broken by one sister and the events that weave them together ever tighter. Unexpected romance happens amid turmoil and tension when secrets are revealed. Georgia Bockoven writes with understanding and compassion on every page and knows how to build a beautiful setting for love and hope to thrive. This story will pull you in and keep you curious as the sisters search for acceptance and love of extended family from Minneapolis to Wyoming.
