Short and Sweet return for Tonex,
By Lil Tae (Fort Washington, MD United States) - See all my reviews

This CD is very artistic from the album cover to the content. Unfortunately, his message can be easily lost in translation by those with a limited view of what Gospel Music is. And I think some of the reviewers here have done exactly that. Tonex has been on the Gospel music scene long enough not to have to shout Jesus in every song for you to get the point. Some listeners don't want Jesus shoved down their throats. And he doesn't do that here. This is nowhere near his best work; but it has memorable songs that are worth a listen. Unspoken is my favorite song, followed by Joy. It seems as though Tonex is taking us on a stylistic, inspirational joyride instead of shoving the name Jesus in our ears. And that's fine. Some may view that as a sellout. But let's be honest. Considering his recent "coming out", no one would want to listen to him shouting Jesus in every song. The church isn't ready for that. It would also come off as forced and disingenuous. Instead he has chosen to release an inspiration CD, to talk about some of his personal experiences. And I appreciate him speaking on some of the subject material on this album, and subtly reference his love for God. Sometimes the subtle message can be the most effective. I like it a lot. 4 Stars.

Okkkk yawl killing me with these reviews! Quite a few of you need to REview your review because when I listen to this thing in my room I feel God come up in there! Yes, he has 2 tracks that are secular but even those 2 do not lead me astray! People want to call Ton3x 'someone misleading the youth' but EVERYtime I play a Ton3x record I'm lead THE way we all should be going. Let's start with track4....GLOR3X! How can you rate an album with a 2 that has such a HG filled song such as Glor3x?! Then there's Unspoken, Again and thank the good Lord for WIRED!!!!!!!! This album is 5stars and you all know it. Bl3nd is GRAMMY NOMiNATED! Ton3x could very well get a grammy for the album some of you dared to rate with 1's 2's and 3's. I love the album, I love Ton3x and I love God. Some of you should try it.
Now, tell me why Deitrick is getting heat too? lol wait....first tell me why he even got inside Unspoken reviews? You're being worse than Craig Lewis now. Stop hating, please because it's ugly and stupid. You can talk about people all day, you can even talk about me and I seriously will not care but it hurts me down to my soul to call GOODmusic bad and rate 5 star artist with a -shutters- 1! Please, do not disrespect music in such a way. Thank you. ThatIsAll.

First I would like to say that Tonex is one of my favorite artists. I have been waiting for something for him for quite some time. To the comment who stated that he is a sell-out and this cd tends to sound wordly, its too bad that you couldn't enjoy how God has used and is still continuing to use this man. Maybe your the sell-out. People are so quick to judge and not really listen to words of the song. No one is going to play this music in a club or on a R & B station. There are so many audiences that listen to him. Im sure before he even made this CD, he was on his face many many times asking for guidance from the Lord. So again I say, stop being so quick to judge others remember what the bible says "Do not judge or you too will be judged". Matthew 7:1 Thanks Tonex!!! "Joy" is one of my favorites.

I'm a big fan of Ton3x and always have been. He went through a rough period in his life not long ago and it's sad to observe that some people won't let him live it down. How unfortunate. But, I can relate to being kicked when you're down.
Obviously, his temporary hardships had no ill effect on his talent! There are a few standout cuts, of course, but the whole album is excellent! God bless you, Ton3x! Keep doing your thing as the Lord leads YOU!!! <3

Despite what many may think about Tonex personally, he is an awesome talent! This album is awesome from beginning to end. He continually takes gospel to another level and makes it in a way that the unchurched can receive the word. It is time out for bashing people for being human (flawed). Let's use some of that agape love that God used with us and be open to receive the gift that Tonex has to offer.
Tonex, I got your back!

And he's also such a rebel...and such a gift!
Love this album...I mean, yes, some of the songs are a bit different for my relatively conservative, "normal" Hip-Hop/R&B taste. No, I'm not always feeling every song the same way. But yes, yes, they don't make them more creative than Tonex nowadays, and that's in ANY urban genre. And that's real. Dude lets you know he means business and hits you with uninhibition right off the gate even starting from the album cover...LOL... Just to extend my original review: this is not to say that he goes completely experimental on his album. As a matter of fact, there are only a few saved artists outside of holy hip-hop that really know how to do the contemporary hip-hop/R&B sound well. What people don't realize is that it takes more than just throwing a so-called "secular" beat behind churchy lyrics. (Notice I said "churchy" and not "holy"; big difference!) Music is more than beats, there is a feel, a language, a soul that many R&P artists don't have. This "language", this "feel", Tonex has mastered very well and very fluently. Remember his "Pronounced Toe-nay" album, where he dabbled in everything from hip-hop to soul and even jazz? He does something a bit similar on this album (channeling everything from "Crazy in Love" to "Thriller" to Mint Condition to Avant to Prince to Krumping!!! (or at least that's the feel I get from his battle-me song, the number 2 track, LOL). However, even on the pop tracks you get the sense that there is something different about this guy. Then when you hear the lyrics you go, "Of course! That's what it was, he's one of those 'saved' ones". Which, coincidentally, brings me to my next point... Apparently the crucifixion will continue even after Tonex has declared that he's now a "pop" artist that's saved and not a strictly gospel artist. Sorry Tonex, I feel for you and I'll be covering you in prayer, darned if you do and darned if you don't, ya know...Just remember that Jesus is your defense, keep doing what you do, those who will hear will hear...and if you are saved, please try and look at this thing through spiritual eyes for a second...just as an example, for the brother/sister who didn't like how Tonex dropped the word "Jesus" from his album, I hear you but think about when *you* talk to Jesus. No need to even overspiritualize this thing, think about when you talk to your best friend, your spouse, your girls/guys...are you always mentioning your friend's name in every sentence, or would it be possible, maybe even remotely conceivable, for you to actually conduct a conversation *with* this person, or a conversation *about* this person, without necessarily referencing their name? (Remember that "Jesus" is your pet name for Christ...what if I just decided to call Him, "God with Us"? Or, "Everlasting Father"? Or, "Prince of Peace" (i.e. he brings peace to the world, he brings peace to my life, he brings peace with God?)...I find it hard to think that someone would listen to this album and not know Who He's singing/rocking about...and I digress as past experience has shown that these kinds of sermons fall on deaf ears anyway, LOL Back to the music: if you're into innovative R&B/Hip-Hop, then you ought to cop this. If you're more into cookie-cutter R&B, then I'd still highly recommend this album as something different that you will enjoy. This guy is fresh and he is a true gift to the world of music.

More "One Thing", please!,

I was really excited after the first three tracks; it was as if someone decided to make an entire album in the style of Amerie's earth-shattering single "One Thing". What's more, 2 of the 3 (the first two, specifically) were actually good! However, after this, the album starts to get more of a gospel/R&B vibe, which isn't really what I am looking for. I don't recommend the entire album for those in search of mindblowing party music, but I do recommend the first two songs for anybody looking for innovative R&B beat work heavy on the horns and drums. These tracks are enough to get 4 stars.
