Ensiferum - what name would suit a band playing battle metal better, than a name that in Latin means "the Swordbearer"?

After finding the band in 1995, Ensiferum's mastermind, guitarist/ main songwriter/ vocalist Markus Toivonen has taken the band safely through turmoils of line-up changes and busy schedules ever since. The band's career fully took flight in 2000 after ... Read more in Amazon's Ensiferum Store

Editorial Reviews

ENSIFERUM, THE highly visual troupe who have long been a market leader when it comes to stirring, armour-plated anthems, will have their fifth studio album released through the Spinefarm label on September 18th, 2012.

Titled Unsung Heroes and produced by Hiili Hiilesmaa (HIM, Sentenced, Apocalyptica, etc.), this is the hour-plus follow-up to 2009 s From Afar , and sees the Finnish five-piece founded in 1995 pushing their signature sound to bold new heights of drama and excess.

A cinematic experience from first note to last , Unsung Heroes takes the listener on a journey of genuine light & shade, with the 16 minute-plus Passion Proof Power showing that when it comes to the epic statement, Ensiferum are very much in the front-line, swords at the ready.

Once again, album art has been supplied by Kristian Wahlin (see attached), with featured special guests including members of Apokalyptischen Reiter plus legendary Finnish singer & actor, Vesa-Matti Loiri.

5.0 out of 5 stars Burning Leaves! June 16, 2013
By Steve
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
One of the great Folk/Viking/Pagan Metal bands of our time. A great addition to any fellow Heathen, I always felt like I was born in the wrong time period, but these guys know how to bring you back with their music. I'd say Burning Leaves has to be the most catchy song on here, since I find myself humming and singing it all the time even when not listening to the music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome back Ensiferum! September 28, 2012
By Guns
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Ensiferum, the self-described "heroic folk metal" band out of Helsinki...bring an engaging new album with Unsung Heroes. From Ensiferum's self-entitled classic "Ensiferum" to today's Unsung Heroes the band has gone through several line up changes. Always true to their sound, each album has a bit of its own flare.

The overall pacing for Unsung Heroes is a bit slower but adds a couple new tricks to include some spoken word passages. Several tracks to add to the playlist with a couple experiments that might be more of interest to fans of the band...some of the old magic pops up here and there with a couple songs showing new direction.

I would give the album a 4/5 for Ensiferum but for the genre a 5/5. Album seems to be a bit under the radar, wanted to welcome Ensiferum back! For those of you that like your heroic folk metal with a little less "pirate metal" feel (no offense to you pirate folk metal lovers out there), Ensiferum presents you with everything from thrash metal speed, a clean female vocal folk song, and the more epic folk metal short, a little shot of the roller coaster ride that is an Ensiferum album. One of the most engaging folk metal bands out there for those with an inkling to heroic folk metal!

4.0 out of 5 stars More Ensiferum is always welcome June 30, 2013
By Brandon
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Ensiferum has been a favorite band of mine for a very long time so I am always excited when they release a new album. Unsung Heroes I must say as much as I do enjoy it, it is for sure my least favorite Ensiferum record. Don't get me wrong it's still awesome and there is lots to love here. I also think the very progressive track Passion Proof Power was a giant step musically for the band. But there are quite a few weak efforts here like Celestial Bond, Star Queen, Last Breath. I did not care much for those. The title track itself is really great though. Bottom line, good effort, a few epic tracks, and hey its some more Ensiferum, so I will stop by complaining.

Favorite tracks off the album: In My Sword I Trust, Pohjola, and Burning Leaves

It's not the best Ensiferum album, and it took me a few listens to get comfortable with it. It is still a descent album

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album May 24, 2014
By Joann
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It's not quite like previous Ensiferum albums but retains all their great musicianship. There's clearly some experimentation and growth going on with "Unsung Heroes" and it may not necessarily be received well by fans who expect something like their older stuff. If that is the case, I'd say to keep listening, it'll grow on you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ensiferum greatness! January 5, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I love every album Ensiferum has released, and this one is no different. A lot of folks might complain that it is not nearly as heavy in some regards as their previous albums, but the overall feel of the album is absolutely amazing. These guys never fail to amaze me.
