Book Description

2 and up
The most anticipated addition to Abrams award winning line of nature books for kids since the debut of the bestselling Earth From Above For Young Readers.

For more than ten years, wildlife photographer Steve Bloom traveled all over the world, roaming through the jungles of Borneo, the African savannahs, and the frozen banks of Antarctica to assemble this dazzling collection of photographs of animals in their natural environments. With an international range and an eye and ear for what kids want to know about animals, the photographs and information in Untamed: Animals in the Wild bring to life a vast panorama of animal diversity, and of the landscapes, climates, and habitats in which they live.

Children will experience animals up-close; the serene gaze of a gorilla relaxing in the trees; a shark jumping in midair to catch its prey; a Siberian tiger traipsing through the snow in search of food; and penguins congregating on an ice floe. Bloom's anthropomorphic approach reveals rage, tenderness, and even humor in his subjects, capturing those fleeting moments when the gap between animal and human seems to disappear altogether. These amazing images, augmented by educational yet entertaining facts, make Untamed: Animals in the Wild an essential volume for all animal lovers and libraries.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 4-7. With astonishing color photos Bloom took in the wild, beautifully reproduced on thick, glossy paper, this oversize volume captures animals in their natural habitat, from polar bears on an ice floe to a huge herd of migrating gnu on the east African savannah. One amazing shot shows a great white shark leaping out of the ocean; it took Bloom 15 days to get the picture. The exclamatory text, written by Christian Havard, is too cute and condescending ("the male peacock is a regular Casanova"; some animals have "really weird" sleeping habits), though Havard does add some interesting commentary and connections about habitat, tools, and the threat to the animals' environment. Occasional spot illustrations by Zicot fill out the page design nicely, but Bloom's photos are the real attraction here; they will move kids with their plea for conservation. Hazel Rochman

This item was okay, but it had the same exact pictures that were in the big UNTAMED book. I did not realize that it was more of a childrens book than an adult book. I was not expecting this and I was a little disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome wildlife photos, October 26, 2009
This review is from: Untamed: Animals Around the World (Hardcover)
This is easily one of the best collections of wildlife photos I've ever seen. Absolutely wonderful. Steve Bloom not only takes photos of interesting animals, but finds really dramatic and innovative angles. Close-ups, aerial shots, action shots. The photos range from Africa to Antarctica, Asia to America. Just about every single shot took my breath away. This is definitely THE wildlife photography book to get.

I also recommend Bloom's Elephant.
