5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific portraits of members of the wiser species
Steve Bloom is a master photographer. Not only is he a great craftsman. His way of composure, the deep love and respect for the animals, his sensibility in creating a personal portrait of and often with his subjects are unmatched.
Even in flight the red parrot is with you, the viewer. Then again, the lazy polar bears resting probably are not...

2.0 out of 5 stars fake photos
Truly stunning photography, but Mr. Bloom's manipulations of his photos go too far. This is not being billed as a photography art book, but as "untamed" "wildlife". Light hitting animals from different directions, missing footprints and identical snowflakes in separate shots more than indicate that these shots are composites.
Leaves me with a feeling of having been...

You have whales and dolphins, all kinds of bears, tigers and deer, zebras and elephants and many more from all over the planet. Although there are two or three pictures of animals hunting, most photographs are peaceful, without the prey.
All are perfect for framing and as far as I know there are fine art prints for sale at his website.
This is a terrific collection of many different kinds of animals living their freedom in the wildlife. Most of the portraits are done with natural light, without flash. Lately quite a lot of wildlife photographers have started using artificial light. To my taste not very often with satisfactory results. But then Steve Bloom knows what he is doing. There is just one picture where the flash seems a little unnatural (but that's my taste)
As is written in the amazon description above this is a smaller version of the original HC book. My advise: get the hardcover. But in case you prefer a smaller format this one will most certainly make you happy.

This book is a revelation. It comprises a collection of the best, most deeply original wildlife photography either my wife or I have seen. Truly outstanding.

There's no fluff or filler in this book. The images are breathtaking. Whether you're a photographer (like me) or an animal lover (like me, too) this book will capture your attention over and over. There are straight documentary shots as well as those with the artistic touch. Just beautiful.

I especially like the cheetah and her cub and the elephant and her calf in the Africa section. Then there is the Penguin population explosion on the beach in Antarctica. And, then... There aren't any page numbers to interrupt the pictures so I can't tell you which pages, but you'll know them when you see them. Also, the image of facing zebras outside the 4 page spread was quite a catch.

Speaking of 4 page spreads, what a treat to open up a nearly 4 foot wide wildebeest/zebra migration (among many others)! WOW!

In short, I love this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars National Geographic, December 23, 2004
This review is from: Untamed (Hardcover)
As a professional commercial photographer with many friends working at NoGeo I have been exposed to countless images of wildlife. I found this book to be a fantastic compilation of imagery that individuals will fall in love with. As for the negative review written below I question his motivation. Buy the book, go thru it with your kids and let's all find the next Jane Goodall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Untamed is AMAZING!, December 27, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Untamed (Hardcover)
Untamed is amazing! I got it for Christmas and I have never seen more incredible pictures! The book is divided into sections by continents. The pictures are of amazing quality and make you feel like you are right there with the animals. It is packed with photos of animals from the different continents. I have never seen better photos. The book is, however a little bit heavy.(9.5 lbs) Anyway, this book can stun you. It has some pages that fold out to make a giant picture. Untamed is truly incredible.

Originally saw this book at a Pottery Barn store and was intrigued enough to gome home and order it online. Have enjoyed the photography and never get bored looking through the book time and time again. Everyone who visits our home and picks it up to look through the book comments on the photos and how beautiful they are.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wildlife Photography At Its Best..., August 14, 2005
This review is from: Untamed (Hardcover)
If you enjoy great wildlife photography this book is for you.

Steve Bloom crosses the planet and goes into the wild zone in search of the perfect shot.

The only disappointment I had was that he does not describe his equipment and methods to any detail so anyone looking for information on "how to" will be left hanging. As a wildlife photographer myself, I'm always curious on the background of the shot as well as film, camera, etc. I guess that some magicians just don't reveal their secrets!

5.0 out of 5 stars How Does He Do It?, August 9, 2005

Timmy Teeter (Nashville, TN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Untamed (Hardcover)
Steve Bloom is a man who knows how to be in the right place at the right time. The photos in "Untamed" are just that. He has captured some of the most incredible moments in the wild that I've ever seen. From the majestic icebergs in Antarctica to the blured world of a cheetah running 70mph in the African Plains. Steeve has told this story with amazingly crisp photography, briliant color, and unforgettable moments that my daughter and I enjoy night after night.

5.0 out of 5 stars World class book, November 3, 2004

Untamed is absolutely overwhelming - I'm so deeply impressed, I can barely
find words to describe how I feel about it. Fantastic images through all
the chapters - every picture makes me realise what a wonderful world we live
in. I am also impressed by the words, which are so true, and are written
with such tremendous sensitivity.
This is undoubtedly a world class book.
