4.0 out of 5 stars A Lingering Sense of Hope
'Until Angels Close My Eyes' is yet another example of Lurlene McDaniel's notoriously melancholy novels. As in her other books, McDaniels is able to portray a sorrowful mood through the characters. However, the final outcome is both depressing and uplifting at the same time. Had the book not had a little hope to cling on to at the end, I wouldn't have enjoyed reading it,...

2.0 out of 5 stars I'm soooo disapointed......
I may be being to critical of this, because I expected soo much more. I was so incredably mad to be really getting into it towards the end then all of a sudden Ethan leaves Leah there crying. AHHHHH. Everyone was about to slap me after a week of whining about how mad I was that it ended like that. Can't Lurlene please make a happy ending for Leah. I'm currently writing my...

'Until Angels Close My Eyes' is yet another example of Lurlene McDaniel's notoriously melancholy novels. As in her other books, McDaniels is able to portray a sorrowful mood through the characters. However, the final outcome is both depressing and uplifting at the same time. Had the book not had a little hope to cling on to at the end, I wouldn't have enjoyed reading it, but it did. The final message was that in the end, not all was lost.
Leah Lewis-Hall is a seventeen year old english teenager living with her mother and stepfather, Neil. Neil was Leah's mom's fourth and favorite husband, so Leah hoped he was around to stay. She was looking forward to living the rest of her life with just her, Neil, and her mother, that is until she was shot down with devastating news. Neil has cancer. A malignant cancer that could threaten his life. Leah liked Neil, a lot, and didn't want to see yet another father figure dissappear from her life, especially one she cared about so much. On top of that heart-breaking news, Leah had to face the reality that the cancer she once had could also return. So Leah had to live in constant fear of two lives being lost, hers, but mainly Neil's.
There was only one person that provided Leah with the comfort she needed to get through it all. Ethan, her sandy-haired, blue-eyed Amish boyfriend. She had met Ethan last summer while working in an Amish community, and instantly they fell in love with each other. The only problem was that Ethan was Amish, and Leah was English. The two worlds clashed immensly and there was a huge barrier inbetween the two cultures. Lately, Ethan had been experimenting with English ways, dressing English, and even moving out of his Amish household to live with Leah and her family. Leah and Ethan both knew their love was genuine and pure, and they both needed and cherished this love. But they also knew that this culture barrier between them could cause problems for both of their lives. Can Ethan and Leah's love hang tough through the biggest hurdeles of their lives? Can they defy the barrier between their two seperate worlds?
Although there is almost a sad tone throughout the whole book, there are instances that shine through with hope. For example, the angel Gabriella that saves Leah from her cancer, and the changed view from Leah on her mother. At the end of the novel, Leah had a new respect for her mother that came from all of her past and recent experiences. I enjoyed reading this novel because McDaniel balanced Neil's deteriorating cancer condition with certain episodes of hope that made you want to keep reading. The questions,"Will Neil live or die?" and, "Will Leah and Ethans love be able to hang tough?" are not really answered until the last few chapters. This factor makes 'Until Angels Close My Eyes' a quick read that you won't want to put down. My advice is, if you've never seen somebody turn something negative into a postive thing, read this book!!

Leah the teenager with cancer has finally come to grips with her disease only to learn her much loved step-father is in relapse with HIS cancer. In her pain and anger, she seeks comfort in the Amish community and specifically in Ethan, her Amish boyfriend. In spite of his family, he loves her and is torn as he tries to make sense of the difference in their lives. The ending takes a turn so sad I had to deduct one star. I closed the book in tears.

5.0 out of 5 stars Until Angels Close My Eyes, May 17, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Until Angels Close My Eyes (Mass Market Paperback)
When I started this book I was glued to it like no one ever glued before. I couldn't put this book down and it was amazing how the author got you hook. When I first started this book I thought, "what is going to happen if Neil dies and if Ethan goes back to the amish ways? What is Leah going to do if that happens? When it does happen I...have no clue of what she is going to do. I felt so sorry for her. When you read this novel you get to know her and you feel what she is feeling through the words of the book. So when I found out Ethan went back to his family I felt every bit of her pain.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but Depressing!, May 29, 2000

I thought this book was great, except the ending was ssoo sad! I thought that as long as they love each other so much, why can't they be together? I thought the other books in the series were better, & I think that there could have been another book in this series, but overall this book was great!

This book, and this series, is like none other i've ever read! It captures love, lost, and friendship. When Neil discovers his cancer is back, she wants to go to the person that will make her feel comforted, Ethan, and the Longarce Family. I didn't put this book down all day, and yes, i finished this series in 3 days, all 3 books! I wish this book ended, the way i would have liked it to end, but in fact, I am liking the ending now, it shows that Leah, is indeed at home, where she belongs, so please to anyone reading this, don't pass this book up, it truely is one of a kind! :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Until Angels Close His Eyes..., March 23, 2004

Until Angels close my eyes is one of the most emotional stories, but a good one. Even though I have only read this book out of the series, I agree that this is a very beautifully written book and Lurlene McDaniel did a wonderful job of explaining the details and understanding the issue of Cancer. Leah was good influence for people to read about and was not as gloomy as she should have been. I still enjoyed this book very much and I think if you enjoy books like this it will be enjoying for you too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book!, March 12, 2002
This review is from: Until Angels Close My Eyes (Mass Market Paperback)
This is definately one of Lurlene McDaniel's best books ever! The whole series is extremely touching but I liked this one the best. I loved the title and even the end was good. After I read it I couldn't stop thinking about it and hoping I will find someone who cares that much about me someday!

4.0 out of 5 stars WIll Their Love Last?, May 9, 2001
This review is from: Until Angels Close My Eyes (Mass Market Paperback)
The book, Until Angels Close My Eyes by Lurlene McDaniel is a great book. Leah (main character) thinks her battle with cancer is over, but the disease that haunts her past has struck someone she loves. Leah finds comfort in a visit to Amish country to see Ethan. Ethan (boyfriend) is changing, his taste in what community he wants to live in. Can their love stay together through all these changes??

On a rating, one through five, five being the best, I would rate this book a four. It was a great book, but it could have had a little more development in the beginning it was kind of slow. There could have been not so much background information. Once it started to pick-up, I couldn't put it down. The author had a great story line. It was realistic, easy to fallow, and I could put myself in Leah's position. You could tell she put a lot of effort in her book. I thought the description of the cancer was very in-depth. She used all the terms in which the doctors would really use. Not just in this book, but also in all of her books I have read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sad but true!, October 27, 2000
This review is from: Until Angels Close My Eyes (Mass Market Paperback)
I would like to say that Lurlene McDanile is a great writter but I would like to see another book wrote about this on to see if Leah or Ethan ever get back together in the future. This was a great book! I learned that teenagers everyday have to face with life threating things but dont realize that they are. Lurlene gives us (teenagers) something to read that could and may happen in our lives or in a fimily or friends live that may effect use.
