Philosopher and theologian Nicholas Wolterstorff's _Until Justice and Peace Embrace_ originated as the 1981 Kuyper Lectures at the Free University of Amsterdam. This was an especially fitting venue and occasion, as Abraham Kuyper, who founded the Free University was himself a theologian as well as a statesman (among other things) whose work influenced the Dutch reformed churches not only in Holland, but in South Africa and elsewhere as well. Charged with looking in particular at the political consequences of the Reformation, in which tradition he grew up, Wolterstorff asks how should a Christian participate in the social order. To answer this question he takes us on a tour not only of theology since the Reformation, but also of necessity how the world that Christians live in has changed since then in its political, social, and economic dimensions. Wolterstorff makes very clear that he considers the United States and the Soviet Union—remembering that he delivered these lectures just before transformation of both systems later in the 1980s—as the two great failed ideals of the Enlightenment. He believed that a new order was desperately needed. He promised at the outset to speak of darkness, but also light, and danger but also hope. He also made it clear he would not deliver and an apology or whitewash of early Calvinism. At the same time, he clearly finds a lot to admire in some of the early Reformers and their theology, however they or others actually turn their theology into praxis.

Page xi constitutes a second preface that appropriately opens the lectures with prayer. It consists of an excerpt from Psalm 85 and a very short “Latin American prayer” that in very few words encapsulate the message of this indispensable book.
