Grade 6-8-Though the series format invokes a sense of fun, there is nothing entertaining about the choices presented here. This is a serious book full of somber historical facts drawn from the period of the Russian Revolution and focusing primarily on the lives of Russian Jews suffering through religious and political persecution. The first few pages introduce a Jewish family with three children; readers assume the identity of the eldest child and proceed to make a series of adult decisions involving work, education, and political and religious allegiances. Each scenario is only a half-page long, so explanations are minimal. Most adventures are completed in 10-to-12 steps and readers are encouraged to try many paths to get a fuller understanding of the times. While the choices are sometimes intriguing, they are generally weighty and often seem contrived. This is a journey into a world of pogroms, poverty, labor unions, and Zionism, weighed down with scores of references to actual figures, events, and movements. While the "Choose Your Own Adventure" (Bantam) format might make historical reality more palatable to some students, this book has limited appeal.
