Editorial Reviews

Product Description

One of the earliest bands to bring truly inventive ideas and energy to traditional Amercan fiddle music, The Horse Flies have created a unique sound that remains fresh, powerful and captivating. Artful original songs, a wild groove-oriented approach to fiddle music, esteemed instrumental skills, and emotive singing come together as old-time fiddle music meets alternative rock, minimalism, modern songwriting and world percussion.

Review

A band that's earned a buzz ... The Horse Flies churn out swirling, addictive songs, blending tradition with invention. --Eliza Wing, Rolling Stone

This is music that challenges the brain without sacrificing the groove. --Dan Kening, Chicago Tribune

Brilliantly peculiar ... new music with gnarled and twisted roots. --Daniel Gewertz, The Boston Herald

I just discovered The Horse Flies 'Until The Ocean' a few days ago after hearing two songs on a live radio program. I found the CD at a local music store and I am simply blown away by this music!

I would hesitate to even try to categorize it for fear of misleading a reader. The closest I could come to a description might be something like "The Talking Heads on bluegrass instruments". But even that description does not adequately do justice to this incredible collection of songs.

The lyrics and composition definitely remind me of the works of David Byrne, and the vocals sometimes even sounds like David Byrne. But at other times I think I'm listening to Danny Elfman. Especially "Carnival Lips", in both cases. And at other times the vocals are entirely unique. But on top of all of this is the fact that this band is using the instruments of bluegrass: a banjo, fiddle (violin), I think I heard an accordian, and of course conventional stringed and various percussion instruments.

All of the songs have magnificent, mesmerizing arrangements and orchestration, and some of them may get your toes tapping or even get you dancing.

This album has instantly become one of my all-time favorites. I wish I had discovered this album two years ago!

I was standing in the audience at the 2004 Telluride Bluegrass festival when The Horse Flies opened their set with Cluck Old Hen. It took all of three seconds of Judy's fiddling to transfix the audience, and another 10 seconds to have the entire crowd hopping for the rest of the night. This album does the same thing to everyone I play it for. What they do with traditionals and standards is new and fresh every time I hear it.

I just wish they'd make it out west more often...

Short story. Buy this disk. You'll like it.

This CD was a great surprise to me. I heard them for the first time in a live concert on the radio at 5AM on a Sunday. Prior to that I had never even heard of them. I love every song on this CD even though none of the songs I was looking for was on it. Being a professional musician I greatly appreciate the skill of the musicians. However, it is the songs that captured me. There are many bands with great musicians whose music I don't like. To me, the song is what matters not the skill level. I guess I'll just have to buy the rest of their catalogue.

Easily the best work they've done yet - incredible tunes, great production, just a great CD. Very highly recommended.

I have been a fan of the Horseflies since their very first recording in which they shared an LP with the Chicken Chokers. Human Fly is one of the best recordings I have ever heard- there really is nothing else like it or to compare it to. Gravity Dance is perhaps a tad overproduced but I like it nearly as much. They have performed on a number of obscure soundtracks over the years and I am not terribly familiar with these. And now, Until the Ocean. Frankly, I just heard it once but my initial impressions are that it compares favorably with Human Fly and Gravity Dance i.e. I really, really like it. I expect that it will be on my playlist for many years to come.

The Horseflies break all genres. Perhaps "Old-Time Gothic Trance" would describe them? This new CD is beautifully produced. The songs are gorgeous and haunting with great depth and rhythm. I saw them live in October and they win the award for best use of a Crybaby wah wah with banjo! Listen to the samples and if the sound is at all appealing to you, buy it now.

Extraordinary music - my feet have been jigging to this all afternoon as I do some tedious data collection / billing. Heard it on Prairie Home Companion last weekend and immediately bought it.
Cajun house trance is the most coherent description I can manage
