5.0 out of 5 stars Fangoria mu(sick) highlight., December 8, 2009
This review is from: Until The Shadows (Audio CD)
The monolithic Goth, Darkwave, and Industrial record label Metropolis has yet again brought forth a new set of dark and titillating electronic horror music to captivate the music scene again. The record label continues to garner major media attention by booking talented and undoubtedly hard working acts that continue to redefine the dark rock scene. While not every act they sign is a fresh face, some are indeed experienced in Goth and Industrial music but still set the pace for a scene that has continued to thrive despite all attempts to marginalize it, water it down, or dismiss it out of hand. Those of us who call it home have never really cared one way or the other; we do what we like, and as we please.

The Canadian act Psyche are indeed well traveled fixtures in the electronic inspired Goth scene. Formed in 1984 by Evan Panic and Anthony Red, the act had such an inspired horror sound that they were picked up for a whirlwind tour with the legendary British Goth fixture act Alien Sex Fiend.

After two decades, the act was signed by Metropolis in 2004 to release their culmination greatest hits CD, THE 11th HOUR. In 2009, a brand new set of re-recordings is set to be released on July 7th, when UNTIL THE SHADOWS arrives at retail. A tenebrous and sensual mist drifts from the North and begins to ensnare a new generation of fans to the darker edge of electronic music.

The album opens with the gripping and sensual riffs of "Disorder", leading you through a trippy glistening and golden dance track. The album features a polished re-release of the acts popular cover "Goodbye Horses" as originally produced by Q-Lazzarus and featured as the one hit wonder from THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. With Darrin Huss's (Evan Panic's) vocals added to the flowing mix, it makes for an eerier take on the frightening fictional character the movie capitalized on. Indeed, I had lovely nightmares revisiting this song.

The album flickers and strums with "The Quickening", a thumping and glittery throb of beautiful darkwave music. "Snow Garden" is an epic industrial dance anthem with tinny synth and thumping bass back beats that moves in waves between beautiful and dystopian imagery. The album closes out with the imperial track "One Last Kiss" leaving a lovers teases as the album closes out.

This album is anything but a "remix" album of prior Psyche material. It is a complete re-imagination of material for the new era of Gothic music. Taking their own imagery from the acts halcyon days and re-recording it resets the bar both for the act itself and for the entire dark rock music scene. Psyche proves both to themselves and to the music scene that their captivating and entrancing music can hook with ease even the most jaded music fans in the Goth scene. If this is the re-imagination, I am waiting with bated breath for the new material due soon.
