Until the End
Memoirs of Sinter-plant Activist Jean L. Gagnon
During the years and the battles fought for compensation, the two that deserve the most credit were Weir Reid and Mickey Maguire. My committee fought hard for me. I always had a group of loyal members. They took every area that I gave them and performed the work to perfection. Those are the ones who deserve the credit because I felt like quitting many times. Those people kept me going.
I have always said it and I would like to give my spouse, Jeannine, an overwhelming amount of credit for what I accomplished. Jeannine’s life was not easy with four children to raise, frequent moving, and upgrading rental accommodations with important health challenges of her own. During the 1968 strike, I spent some time out of province continuing to earn a living and providing the best that I could for my family when she raised our children alone. When I was home, she would listen to my problems and challenges and provide support and encouragement. She felt my pain, my fear, my doubt and nursed me through the really bad times. I will solemnly repeat it, Jeannine was the constant in my life and she never made me choose between her and my Boys. I realize she has made great sacrifices in her life. Ours was not an easy life but our faith supported us.
Then let us not forget that my children Robert, Yvon, Louise and Paul did miss their father a lot and they must also be credited for their sacrifices. They accepted and understood that I had a mission and they never made me feel that I was falling short at any time as a father. I would like to give my family thanks for their support and encouragement throughout the years.
I also thank the good Lord for giving me the strength to battle for a cause that often seemed desperate. Thank you, God.
