A fascinating historical and magical story of time travel.

Gavin's Untimed was a fun and adventurous time travel novel and I loved the twists he created to make the time travel more complicated and the story more interesting.

It also makes writing my own work that much more enjoyable when I get to it, and I feel like I've learned something from reading other author's work.

Andy Gavin has fast become one of my favorite authors. I loved his first book, the dark fantasy The Darkening Dream, and I think I love Untimed even more. This is the first book in a new YA Time Travel series, and the premise and characters are so intriguing and unique, I couldn't help but fall in love.

Charlie is a fascinating character. He doesn't know how special he is at the beginning of this book, all he knows is that no one can remember his name, not even his own mother! The only exceptions are his father and his aunt, both of whom lead unusual lives and travel often. Charlie has been studying history his whole life, but he never imagined he'd be living it until he's chased through a hole in time, right into 1725 London. Stuck in the past, Charlie finally meets a girl who actually remembers him; another time traveler like himself. Problem is, she has some baggage. Namely, a baby and two boyfriends--one of whom wants to kill Charlie, and the other none other than Benjamin Franklin. If you've ever wondered what the world would look like now had Ben Franklin met an untimely death, Gavin answers that question.

I don't want to spoil anything, but this romp through the past is action-packed, thought provoking, romantic and fun. You also don't want to miss the extraordinary black and white illustrations throughout this book that just brought the whole thing to life. And check out the cover. AMAZING! But I wouldn't expect anything less from the man who also created the video games Jak & Daxter and Crash Bandicoot.

All I can say is, write faster Andy Gavin. I'm dying to know what happens next with both your series! :)

"Untimed" is the story of a boy named Charlie, who happens to be the son of a time traveler- only he has no idea. He lives with his mother and mysterious father in modern day Philadelphia; the year 2011. He spends most of his life being invisible to his peers: his mother needs a post-it to remember his name, his teachers act as though everyday is their first day meeting him, and the girl next door who spent every fourth of July with him has no idea he exists. That is, until one day, he finds himself in 1700s London and he comes across a young pick pocket named Yvaine who can remember his name- because she is a time traveler too.

There are a lot of sources of tension in this novel as it deals with questions of re-writing history and the effects of altering specific timelines. We are taken to a time when the famous Benjamin Franklin is young and has no knowledge of the great things he is supposed to do. And then we are taken through a future in which America loses the Revolutionary War and the Brits are everywhere. However, one of the more interesting facets of this novel was the way in which the author built his rules of time travel in this world. For example, time would fill in "ghosts" of the time travelers when they jumped, and they would always be equipped with what they needed. They have the clothes of the time, the accessories of the time, and the language of the time. There were limitations to how often they could jump and to where they could jump.

These limitations were particularly noteworthy in regard to Yvaine and Charlie's romantic relationship. Girls can only push themselves up through time and boys can only pull themselves down through time.

Utterly and completely amazing! I love this book! When is the next one coming out because I want it NOW, NOW, NOW! Andy weaves a tale that is original, unique and well-written! The man holds up to his amazing contributions to the Gaming world and now adds gems to the literary one!

The book is full of action and adventure. Andy's characters have well developed arcs, you can see them grow and change as the story goes one on. I absolutely LOVE Yvaine! I can see how her ma told her she was full of piss and vinegar. Charlie is a total trooper about his misadventures, I'm not sure how I would handle any of that.

Andy's world is very detailed and it's clear he did his research. I love all of the fine details he puts in and then how he manipulates them as the story progresses. And Time-Quakes! What an awesome idea. Since I read this before The Darkening Dream, I can't comment on it in relation to his other works' although my review for DD will be up before this one, I can only imagine it is just as good!

I highly recommend this book. Everyone read it. LOVE IT. It is a must!

Untimed is awesome! Time travel is such an awesome concept, and Andy does it right. This book mixes fun and excitement with science and history, and it all makes sense! The story is told through the eyes of Charlie, a coming-of-age time traveler. He is a very likeable character and a joy to share the adventure with. The main villain is awesome as well. He's a terminator-like clock man that can also travel through time, and his mission is to kill all time travelers!
Untimed is a great read filled with a lot of originality, making it interesting and fun. Before you know it, you're at the end wanting more! I hope Andy continues the series...
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone!
