5.0 out of 5 stars Untitled - Robert Lazzarini Works on Paper, August 8, 2006
This review is from: Untitled: Robert Lazzarini Works on Paper (Hardcover)
I was familiar with Lazzarini's sculpture but had never seen any of the drawings. This beautifully designed book not only displays them well but the various points of view given by the curator, Brad Thomas, and the interview between the artist and Chuck Close add considerable depth to intent and meaning. As a professor of drawing it will be a good addition to my bibliography on contemporary drawing.

5.0 out of 5 stars As much a work of art as the art, itself!, July 23, 2006

This Catalog is a work of art in and of itself. To place this piece on a bookshelf with only its spine showing would be criminal. Great choice of content for the cover! And, the placement of the drawings on the pages without using hard rule borders or drop shadows is masterful; the drawings appear to lie right on the page before us.

The text is artful, too: "...obfuscating with...a cluster of haptic lines" for "scribbling over" gave me a frisson. :^)

I just received my copy of the Mint's (Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC) Lazzarini sculptures catalog. While the content is admirable and informative (although not quite up to the standard set by the "Untitled:..." catalog), the physical form of the Mint catalog is - at best - perfunctory, and doesn't do Lazzarini and his exhibit the high credit that "Untitled: Robert Lazzarini Works on Paper" does. This is a tributary work of art, itself; the creativity, energy, and industry put into it shows and must be apparent to Lazzarini, himself. I bet he has THIS catalog on his coffee table, while the Mint cat is sandwiched between seldom used books in a studio case.
