5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised
I bought this CD, just because. I didn't expect too much from it. Believe me; Amazon's 30-second sound bites don't deliver what this CD truly holds for its listeners. I have Costner's other CD (Roving Boy), and it was all right, pleasant enough, but not great. Untold truths is a huge departure from Roving Boy. Costner sounds good. Good arrangements. Good Lyrics. Nice...

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than Waterworld
While I usually rage against most Country music (Leann Rimes, Wynona Judd, and Mary Chapin Carpenter are the only ones who escape the wrath) I must say that the idea of Kevin Costner singing was intriguing enough for me to actually listen to this. While Costner is a premiere actor, he is not yet a premiere singer. But I did find that he can carry a tune, has a pretty...

Nice instrumentation. A little bit country. A little bit rock and roll. I believe this CD will satisfy those who enjoy today's modern country sound, as well as those who love music in general. Very interesting CD that I will play a quite a lot. A big thumbs up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Country CD, November 13, 2008
This review is from: Untold Truths (Audio CD)
I know what most people think when they hear an actor becoming a singer. What the hell?? If they are acting, and you've HEARD them sing before, i.e. Wayne Brady, then it's no surprise on what they sound like. But if it's Kevin Costner, all we've heard him do is pretty much act. But with Modern West, comes Kevin Costner. His voice...the only person I can compare it with is Joe Cocker's. Joe's voice is raspy and nothing like it. Kevin Costner's the same way. Some might hate this CD, and some may like it. Just give Kevin's voice a shot. The music is great. And I hardly love country music. And seriously, with most of Kevin Costner's movies, this music can find places in those movies. Great cd!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! What a refreshing surprise!, December 17, 2008

First, need to point out that I am a big Costner fan. Love his movies and frankly, I think he's very underrated as an actor. But, I'm here to talk about his music... WOW! I'm a big fan of the country/rock sound and thats what I think you get with this disc. "Five Minutes From America" and "Long Hot Night" are excellent. But, my favorite song on the disc is "Down in Nogales" which could easily have been a Chris Isaak cover (not exactly country or rock), but wow, what a fantastic song! Simply put, Costner's voice and lyrics are very, very good. If you like John Hiatt, John Mellencamp, or Chris Isaak - I think you'll like this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it, December 5, 2008

For a guy from Switzerland, I needed to order this album via the USA. It's a great country / road trip album. Great voice, music and arrangement. I like most "Down in Noagles" and "Superman 14".

5.0 out of 5 stars An extremely talented man, May 11, 2009

This album does not have a so-so tune on it. Mr. Costner sings lead vocal, plays acoustic guiter, and co-wrote many of the songs. I am amazed at the different talents this man portrays.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy Going Kevin, December 16, 2008
This review is from: Untold Truths (Audio CD)
I love Kevin Costner, and was very surprised to learn that he sang in a band of his own! He has many talents, not the greatest voice, but it is just him, being him! I love the sound of his easy voice anyway. Very relaxing, love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really HOT, December 12, 2008
This review is from: Untold Truths (Audio CD)
I first heard Kevin sing at the end of the Postman with Amy Grant. I thought, I'd love to hear more. And sure enough, Untold Truths is born. I was at the free concert in Ventura and was honored to be in front of the stage to hear them during their "practice". It was awesome. You could tell everybody was having a great time. You have a great time because the songs are so cool. My favs are Superman 14, Long Hot Nights, Every Intention, and Backyard is a real hoot. NASCAR races are smart for using this for their theme song. Do not pass up a chance to hear this CD. I can't hardly wait for more to come.

I was pleasantly surprised when I received this cd. It is obvious Kevin Costner has a passion for music!! Unlike most cd's I've purchased, I loved EVERY song on it and they wrote/co-wrote every one!! As a birthday gift, my son took me to see them in concert. It was AMAZING!! Don't pass this one up!!! I can't wait for their next cd.

I was really surprised to know that Kevin Costner sang. I first heard Kevin Costner and Modern West on Sirius' buzz cut. I enjoyed hearing Superman 14 and also 90 Miles an Hour that I would rewind my sirius over and over again, until I hit my destination. I have informed all my friends and family of his music. I have always been a fan of his acting and love his music just as much. I am looking forward to hearing more in the future and also look forward to having his CD in my Christmas stocking. Thank you Kevin Costner and Modern West for adding to my Country Music. You have my ears.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very surprising and solid album, March 23, 2010
By
This review is from: Untold Truths (Audio CD)
I've been a fan of Kevin Costner for a very long time, but I was surprised when I first read that he had his own band and had even done some small tours in recent years. I never knew he'd been involved with singing. When it was announced he would be releasing a full album, I knew my fandom would dictate that I buy it, especially after hearing a couple samples on his band's MySpace.

The opening track, "Long Hot Night," is about a man, unable to sleep due to a hot summer night, reflecting on his life and how it's not what he expected it would be. It's probably the catchiest song on the album and has some good vocal work by Costner. "90 Miles An Hour," the song that peaked my interest in the album, is another sing-along tune about a man who's held back for too long and finally breaks out of his mundane life to try and do something interesting. It's a song I can identify with pretty well. The best song on the album is "5 Minutes From America," about a single parent who's fled New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, remembering all the good times he had there and trying to find a place where he can start over. Costner really sells this song vocally, and it's probably his best cut on the CD. Other tracks include "Superman 14," reflecting back on one's childhood and leaving the town they grew up in, "Down In Nogales," about a man and woman who share a memorable time in Nogales, Arizona, and "Gotta Get Away," about a man with a simple life who's tired of all the criticism and expectations put on him by the world and was recorded for Costner's 2008 film SWING VOTE.

Kevin Costner is hardly a threat to the likes of Garth Brooks and Clint Black. But that said, this is a nice little album that sounds very professional and has plenty of catchy tunes. There's some occasional fiddle work on the album, but this is more akin to country-rock than straight-up country. Costner's voice has a bit of gravel to it but it can also be surprisingly soft. UNTOLD TRUTHS is nothing groundbreaking, but Costner and Modern West pull it off well. They're not out to change the word with their music, but if you wandered into a club and heard them playing, you'd stick around to enjoy the music and have a fun time.
