Intended to be released before the Make-Up's final studio album, Save Yourself, but inexplicably misplaced for years, Untouchable Sound -- Live! actually makes more sense as the band's swan song. After all, their incendiary debut album, Destination: Love, was recorded in concert, and as good as their studio albums were, nothing beat seeing the band live -- preferably in the tiniest, seediest hole-in-the-wall club possible, much like Washington, D.C.'s the Black Cat, where this concert took place. Untouchable Sound -- Live!'s recording is of significantly better quality than Destination: Love, but since it's the Make-Up, it's the farthest thing from polished. Capturing the band in its final lineup with guitarist Alex Minoff, the set includes classic Make-Up tracks like "They Live by Night," Save Yourself tracks like "I Am the Pentagon" and "White Belts," singles like "Born on the Floor" and "Every Baby Cries the Same" -- and, of course, lots of breathless testifying in between songs from Ian Svenonius. Although Save Yourself was the band's most subdued album, all of the songs from it sizzle here, while "Hey! Orpheus" and a slow-burning rendition of "Wade in the Water" bring the furious live energy that the band made its reputation on. Untouchable Sound -- Live! is a great audio snapshot of one of the '90s' most exciting underground rock bands in its element. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

This is the best Make-Up record by far, recorded in 2000 just before they broke up.
Their live shows were always the highlight for me and the other live records just didn't capture the sound in the same way. Sure they're cool, wiuth good between song patter and presenting the IDEA of the group, but this one is totally rocking and exciting. The songs are reworked from original versions; THEY LIVE BY NIGHT sounds housy almost and WADE IN THE WATER sounds straight up like P Funk.
This one also features the line-up they had at the end, with Alex Minoff on second guitar and back up vocals.
That means more James Canty keyboards--the solos are unrelenting. The ferocity has to be heard.
What else? Shrrieking, basslines that rule, Al Jackson style drumming. Why was this band so influential? The reason is here. Great packaging too; Studio 1 style cut outs.
This record rules!!!
