5.0 out of 5 stars Understanding the emotional progression of our culture, June 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Untouched: The Need for Genuine Affection in an Impersonal World (Paperback)
On both a personal and professional level, this book is a must-read for anyone trying to understand how and why we act and react to each other. It also clarifies how to conduct oneself in a "warmer", more human fashion. Caplan has obviously spent much time studying the subject of human action and interaction, and has outlined the reasons for our change in emotional awareness of one another. Her understanding of the why-to's and wherefore's of our current societal predicament leads the reader into a deeper understanding of themself and those around them. I genuinely appreciated her suggestions on how to be "warmer" with others, in both professional and personal settings, and have found that they work! I found her suggestions on dealing with others that are "cold" and "unemotional" of priceless value, as are her suggestions of how to deal with people that "fly off the handle" in the face of another's emotional expressiveness. Bravo to Caplan, who has pegged our culture so well as the cold, unemotional society we are becoming, for flying in the face of what we like to think as progress, and for suggesting that this "progress" might not be the best route for us to be travelling. Bravo times two for having the courage to speak out against the "norm" that dictates how we should behave in any given situation!
