Editorial Reviews

For fans' eyes only-- Yep Roc Records is proud to present the first-ever live compact disc from musician, producer and raconteur Nick Lowe. Untouched Takeaway pulls you out of the cheap seats and escorts you direct to the front row for two evenings of Lowe's soulful and uniquely anecdotal compositions. These two tours find Lowe backed by The Convincers (2001) and The Impossible Birds (1995) whose members include Geraint Watkins, Steve Donnelly, Robert Trehern, Bill Kirchen and Paul Riley. Lowe's work as a producer has brought him great acclaim. He co-founded Stiff Records and in the process helped launch the British Indie label boom, as well as, the careers of artists such as Elvis Costello and The Pretenders. As a solo artist, Lowe has worn a variety of moods. These 17 tracks span the course of his multi-decade career and prove once and for all why he is the "Jesus of Cool." TRACK LISTING: 1. What's Shaking On The Hill 2. Faithless Lover 3. I Live On A Battlefield 4. You Inspire Me 5. Cruel To Be Kind 6. Indian Queens 7. Let's Stay In 8. Shting Shtang 9. The Beast In Me 10. What's So Funny Bout Peace, Love and Understanding? 11. 12 Step Program 12. Dream Girl 13. Without Love 14. 14 Days 15. Tombstone Every Mile 16. Shelley My Love 17. I'll Be There

4.0 out of 5 stars Music great as always-poorly put together though, December 11, 2004
This review is from: Untouched Takeaway (Audio CD)
My problem with this live CD is not the music itself. The only people who even know this cd exists are huge Nick Lowe fans anyways. However, this CD would have worked so much better if it was just a recording of 1 performance. Instead, this a CD where it feels as if there was a break between every song which leads to a live CD where there is no audience interaction recorded. My other problem is that some of the recordings are not really well done. They sound more the sound quality that you hear at a local labor day fest.

Regardless of this, it's still worth picking up. The versions played often are significantly different than the studio versions. While I prefer the studio versions, there are some great versions especially "What's So Funny.."

4.0 out of 5 stars Why didn't this get wider release and more promotion?, September 10, 2005
This review is from: Untouched Takeaway (Audio CD)
An excellent collection of live performances of an eclectic selection of his songs. Geraint Watkins play on this too - 'nuff said.

If you like Nick Lowe, you owe it to yourself to buy this.

Nick Lowe is a great singer/songwriter who knows a catchy lyrical or musical hook, and is a great entertainer. You can hear his musical roots on this disk, calling back to the Everly Brothers. I own most of the releases, and am always looking for more to add to my collection. I recommend the box set, in that there are lots of live nuggets that are otherwise hard to get.
