"Living in a world of 'normalcy' and total acceptance by society, to then living as a minority and listening to the judgment of others, is just the beginning of Kaufman's true account of his journey from both sides." —Contextions Magazine

I highly recommend this to anyone on the fence about coming out.

A great story, but unfortunately it is not well written, is repetitive and really difficult to read as a result.
Jacki Schirmer
We know very little of the wives story and nothing from her perspective.

I found this book while browsing the internet. I have a good friend whose husband just came out of the closet, so I was looking for ways I might be able to offer some emotional support to her and them. Although the subtitle of the book makes it seem sensationalist, I was pleasantly surprised to find David and Cathy's story to be sweet, compelling, and incredibly "normal" in a way. After all, lots of couples grow apart after 20 years. What's particularly beautiful about their story is how supportive these two were with each other, and what good friends they've remained. I've since learned that "David" is now Danielle--a further development in her quest to find her authentic gender/sexual identity. (Check out her blog at Huffington Post as a transwoman!) Hooray for Danielle! I think this book will appeal to anyone who is struggling with gender identity. The "voice" of the book is fresh and innocent--Dr. Kaufman is really speaking her truth and being incredibly vulnerable. I highly recommend this book. It's a memoir I won't soon forget.

Anyone who has had to hide who they are during a period of their lives, or sometimes all of their life, get's used to seeing a different person in the mirror. To the point where we become so good at being someone else that we simply never choose to let our friends, family, or partner in on our little secret. It can take years to unwind the damage this can cause when we either decide to drop the mask, or we get caught in a misstep.

Now imagine the universe has secretly guided you to share your life with someone who is wearing the same mask! Enter David and Cathy; in a relationship seemingly built on fate. Their amazing journey together takes off from a foundation of love, and lands on a level of awareness and respect for one another. If only all relationships did the same! How wonderful to have each other to offer support, comfort and knowledge.

I highly recommend this to anyone on the fence about coming out. Kudos to David Kaufman, for taking off his mask, exposing his vulnerability, and sharing with the rest of us how great life can be when there is only one person looking back at us in the mirror.

Having known several married people who came out at various stages of their marriages, I was eager to read David Kaufman's first-hand account of he and his wife's unusual journey. Theirs is a story of love, support and mutual respect, which I feel will inform and inspire anyone facing this or a similar life-altering situation. As another reviewer noted, the Kaufman's story is not sensationalized. Rather, it is straightforward and refreshingly sincere.

I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Kaufman's story about how he came out later in life.
This is an entertaining, yet thought-provoking-book.

Since the book ends with his coming out as a gay man, I hope he'll write a sequel about later deciding to transition to female.
