I just love this CD. I bought it yesterday in Boston and listened to it all the way through on my trip home to New Hampshire. I promptly put it on again this morning and decided to write this quick review.

I first remember hearing Leslie West's first album (with Blood of the Sun, etc.) in the fall of 1969 and it hooked me on his fat, singing vibrato, achieved by a LP Junior through a naturally overdriven amp. I followed him through various incarnations of Mountain through the years, his collaboration with Jack Bruce and his solo career. I eventually went back and sought out his playing with the Vagrants. At some point during the '80s, I became less enthralled with his sound because (now this is a personal taste observation, mind you), for me, his sound became increasingly processed with way too much chorus for me. I saw him live quite a few times during this period and was disappointed, not by his playing, but by his sound.

This CD, for me, returns to the sonic area of his earlier records. The overdrive and beef is still there, but the cold, chorus drenched sound is gone. That is welcome. Perhaps it is the gear he is using or the players on the CD (who were heavily influenced by his early sound). Whatever the reason, this offering is overpouring with feel and taste. Good stuff, Leslie!!

The other guitar players, Slash, Zakk Wylde (sp?), Steve Lukather, Billy Gibbons and Joe Bonamassa are sympathetic partners and compliment their mentor's licks as they should. I particularly like Zakk's psychotic fills alongside Leslie's more blues oriented legato runs. Joe Bonamassa'a duo with him on Eddie Boyd's 3rd Degree actually matches the quality of the version with Jack Bruce on the first WB&L album (which must make Joe proud)!

I agree with the other reviewer who mentioned Leslie going back to his ballsier tone. He sounds great on this one. Good songs, good singing, good performance. I disagree with the other reviewer who said his singing sounded weak. I think Leslie's voice has gotten better with age. I also like the way he sounded with the old Mountain, but I think his voice has aged nicely.

I am writing this when there is only 2 other reviews - one favorable and one with only 1 star. Quite frankly, I can't understand what the 1 star reviewer is talking about. This is probably one of the better Leslie West albums I've heard in a very long time. One thing Leslie West has been very accomplished at is playing blues guitar - raunchy, overdriven, loud and in your face....and that's definitely here. His slide guitar sounds like a 10,000 horsepower chain saw! His well known 'guests'....or "suspects" only add to the guitar quality here. The only thing that stopped me from giving this a 5 star review is that I'd like to see some more diversity to his CD's and while I like the blues....I'm getting a little tired of hearing nothing else but and miss the artistic diversity of his Mountain days...but then, that was due in large part to the wonderful composition skills of Felix Pappalardi (RIP). Jack Bruce brought some of that sound back with West, Bruce & Laing, but now...it seems to be getting a little stale. While this is one of Leslie's better CD's .....it will probably be one of the last I purchase as it's all starting to sound the same....but I do love the sound when Leslie decides to kick it out - when the phrase describing a guitar as an "Axe" was coined....they must have had Leslie West in mind because he can lay down some chops.

I had been waiting for quite some time for Mountain, or Leslie West, to reinvent themselves after the departure of Felix Pappalardi/Gail Collins. The time is NOW! All Leslie needed was "A Little Help From My Friends".
This cd, while influenced by the blues is much more. Leslie, somewhat recently, released 2 blues albums which captured his blues roots, and were quite good. But there was something missing in my opinion...
This cd showcases some new, moody, "power ballads" (My Gravity and Legend) that were missing from any recent Mountain or Leslie solo work. It has some great bluesy tunes in the remake of "Third Degree" (WBL fans will smile at he end), One More Drink, Mud Flap Momma, Higher Ground... But I was hoping for more, and this cd delivers!

On the muscianship, Leslie's voice is strong, his guitar is pure and unmistakenly "Leslie" and the guest guitarists just enhance the music which is well written. "To The Moon" is also a fantastic song that really can't be catagorized--reminds me of Paint it Black, but different--good tune, good message.
I love this Cd! Can't wait till he gets a leg up and tours in support of it :-)

Leslie West has been Rockin' the World since the mid 60s, and this album will go down as one of his greatest ones. This was a gigantic effort, and even better than Mountain's classic Masters of War album (which I thought was one of the best blues/rock albums of the last 10 years). Unusual Suspects is so raw, so white hot. Leslie's first rate and much idolized tone & vibrato is on display better then at any time since he laid down his Les Paul Jr and Sunn amps for the last time. Any fan of any of the heroes on this album should buy immediately, it will enhance their inner Rock demon. Its a MUST LISTEN.

The fact to remember: Its simply amazing how these musicians are all playing so together. No egos, no battles. Just today's guitar heros paying homage, and playing together with one of the biggest guitar idols of the 20st Century.

Sorry Leslie, you proved it over 45 years ago, and nothing's changed, you ARE still a legend.

NOTE: The special edition includes a full color, well polished book on the creation of this album, with great pictures. Get this fans!!!
