5.0 out of 5 stars Increasing The Odds
I once heard that a woman over 40 has a greater chance of getting struck by lightning, than getting married.

Not the best of odds. After reading just about every book available on soul mates, twin souls and relationships in that obsessive need to find answers to my still unmarried state, I came across "Unveil the Mysteries of the Female" by Theun Mares.

Having read the book and the reviews I question the basis on which this teaching rests . Contrary to what the person below writes the book does not refer to the female as a non gendered state. Rather it talks about women . Nor does it allude to this as being only an aspect of what a persons attributes are. The rationale seems to go that the soul having chosen to be female...

But to be honest, first I read his book "The Quest for Maleness." For obvious reasons.

"Unveil the Mysteries of the Female" hasn't delivered my perfect mate on a silver platter; however, it did help me to clearly understand the whys of my two failed marriages and indeed who I wanted to become: a true female, not a woman competing against the men in her life.

This is not a book for the faint of heart or for women looking for yet more ways to manipulate a man into a relationship. It is a new look at an age old mystery. The female. I recommend it to all women and to all men who are willing to make that leap into the unknown.

4.0 out of 5 stars THE CHALLENGE OF FEMININITY, February 12, 2001
This review is from: Unveil the Mysteries of the Female (Paperback)
UNVEIL THE MYSTERIES OF THE FEMALE BY THEUN MARES A REVIEW BY ANTHONY GAGLIANO

This is a controversial book. This will be especially true for those readers who grew to adulthood during a time when the woman's movement has forced all of us to reconsider previously held views concerning the role of women in civilized society. But the battle for equality and an end to male dominance leaves one important question left unanswered: What is the true relationship between men and women? Are we "equal" or complimentary? Is the universe unisexual? Is androgyny the new ideal for the new age? Are there no differences between male and female beyond the obvious physical distinctions? These are the questions Toltec seer and author Theun Mares answers in Unveil the Mysteries Of The Female. But not everyone will happy with those answers. According to Mr. Mares, a Toltec Nagal of the third attention, men create and women nurture. Furthermore, he asserts that only by supporting the male in her life can a woman achieve her feminine potential. Equally controversial is the idea that in a relationship, whether professional or romantic, it is the male who, as an arbiter of the known, must provide the lead. While this may all seem archaic, these statements are all compatible with the tenets of the world's major religions, none of which espouse androgyny as an ideal. As I said, this is a controversial and thought provoking book, one that will make many a woman think about using it for the purpose of starting a bonfire. The male reader, however, if he is brave enough or foolish enough as the case may be, might wish to consider giving a copy Mr. Mare's book as a belated Valentine's Day gift to his significant female other. Just be prepared to sleep on the couch -- particularly if your wife wears the pants in the family.

5.0 out of 5 stars A challenge to women to understand themselves and their rela, June 9, 2002

Fiona (England UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unveil the Mysteries of the Female (Paperback)
I have read this book twice. The first time round I threw it in the bin more than once, then picked it out again and continued reading.
The book challenges the socially accepted concepts of what it is to be female in a way that whilst making so much sense deep down, causes the reader to re-evaluate their whole view of just who they are and who they want to be.

Having just finished re-reading it, I found so much more in the text that I wondered if I had ever read it in the first place. Practically applying the concepts in this book, I have been better able to understand and, more importantly, change my interactions and relationships for the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book thats a tool for life, December 27, 2000

This review is from: Unveil the Mysteries of the Female (Paperback)
In 'Unveil The Mysteries of the Female' the Toltec Nagal, Theun Mares discusses the nature of what it means to be female. By presenting the nine myths of the female, and by presenting a clear way forward I feel that Theun Mares has articulated a lot of deep instinctive feelings about gender that I have been trying to grasp and understand.

I have always felt that men and women were equal but fundamentally different in their approach to themselves and the world in a way that goes beyond any gender based conditioning of cultural origin.

I can understand how easy it is to mis-hear the message in this book, as a female my first response to the concept of following a male lead was to respond with a defensive attitude and say " I am not giving up my purpose and life for a man".

Since then I have realised that I am not required to do so. My understanding of the teachings is that I choose to align myself with a male whose purpose I sense I can follow, because it is the same as my purpose.

I like the sound of being a True Female and I return to this book again and again as a resource and for inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lighthearted and evocative call for femininty., April 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Unveil the Mysteries of the Female (Paperback)
This book encourages the reader to look deep within and unveil the treasures that lie there. In a world that is so hung up on the form or material side of life, it provides a point of departure, to pause and listen, to question what the talkative mind tells us we should or must be. It helps us go beyond the social conditioning. For once there is quiet we all hear what our hearts are really telling us.

This book brought tears to my eyes as it helped me explore the feminine side of my nature. I have another piece of the jigsaw now.

Thank you Theun

5.0 out of 5 stars The proof of the pudding lies in the eating, December 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Unveil the Mysteries of the Female (Paperback)
In this book Mr. Mares addresses such concepts as coming to grips with potential, (literally meaning one's power or ability) the dual nature of the female, the Toltec definition of the Dreamer and much more. Terms such as male and female, technically speaking, relate to specific states of awareness, and depending on what an individual may need to learn in this lifetime the dreamer will incarnate one polarity of its awareness, the polarity most needed to take the next step forward for the individual knowing the totality of the self. Hence we approach life as either a man or a woman depending on which polarity we need to develop in this lifetime. Inherent within this fact and not so subtle, (yet it is amazing how many reviewers missed this)male and female are equal and both are necessary for intelligent co-operation in fulfilling our collective purpose, the evolution of awareness.

Again, the terms male and female, technically speaking, refer to specific states of awareness, not the physical gender as such. So in this respect it should be noted that, according to this book, we on the physical plane, that is, life within manifestation, are ALL female in relation to the Spirit, irrespective of gender! Why? Because it is the Spirit that carries and secretes the purpose of life, yet for a purpose to come to creation it must be conceived, and it is this conception, coupled with the direction and purpose provided by the Spirit that makes us in manifested life, the Tonal, female in relation to the Spirit, the Nagal. For greater clarity and understanding of Tonal and Nagal, Male and Female, read this book

Finally, Theun Mares explicitly explains that this book is written for the non-serious student, and if one wishes for more detail and clarity then it is the three books in the formal teaching series that should be read. However, this book does go into concepts that are difficult to verbalize. One aphorism that is quite profound if properly put into application and that I feel should be noted here, is that:

"Life is a feeling, not an intellectual exercise."

5.0 out of 5 stars Truth can be difficult but it can set you free, September 21, 2000

This review is from: Unveil the Mysteries of the Female (Paperback)
This book, and its companion volume, The Quest for Maleness, contain surprises, in that they challenge our currently held opinions about what it means to be a female, and what it means to be a male. And yet, after the defensiveness one is left strenghtened and validated at the deepest level. This has been the reaction of the women with whom I have shared this book.

People are longing for someone to speak out with a lucid voice and compassionate heart about how women and men differ, and how they can live and love together. The tragedy for women is that there are so few true males in the world today. Theun Mares provides the hope and the guidance to women on how to embrace their full gifts and true power as women. He also offers a vision of how women and men, equal yet different, are meant to work together for the upliftment of each other and the evolution of the human race.

The affect on me of this book was to enhance the respect and love I already had for women. I have recommended this book to many women, who have sincerely thanked me upon reading the book.

This review is from: Unveil the Mysteries of the Female (Paperback)
Having read the book and the reviews I question the basis on which this teaching rests . Contrary to what the person below writes the book does not refer to the female as a non gendered state. Rather it talks about women . Nor does it allude to this as being only an aspect of what a persons attributes are. The rationale seems to go that the soul having chosen to be female her highest path exists in relation to the male . An earlier review also sparked an interest in me to see if indeed this author had said/could have said that females are not creative in their own right or that they do not create anything new. Why would anyone write such a thing and that only men can and do create ,for this is the authors claim.

There is no metaphysical basis for this statement in any of the toltec traditions. In this the book is very dissapointing and flies in the face of coomon sense and even fairness and humility.

Intelligent cooperation is spoken of often, but it would seem to be that the female cooperates with the male to fulfill his purpose since it is the male who has purpose. And the male cooperates with the female by leading her and giving her something( his purpose) to devote her energies to. His definitions of the tonal and the nagal as regards male and female are extra ordinary lacking in back up and I would dare say that at best this is one mans opinion.

He has not been able to garner a popular following in the new age movement and this even among those who are very open minded. It might seem that it would be women who would mostly be turned off by this but so was I. One obvious point seems to illude our noble toltec. The soul is androgenous always any and in all ways . One may choose to be one or the other sex to experince a particular polarity , but that polarity was never meant to limit or define the expression of self or creativity. And th eopposite polarity of expression is also available to the soul at any thime it so wishes.

If the author was talking about polarities and not physical gender as such I believe he would have made that clear and would not have to resort to derogatorary phases such as the spectical of women who are trying to wear the trousers within the home. such statments taint the whole book.

2.0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment, April 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Unveil the Mysteries of the Female (Paperback)
I was really shocked at this book (and not in a good way) after being impressed with his first three excellent books. The whole idea of this book is that a "true female" is willing to be and needs to be "led". I was really stunned when he stated that females can't create - only men can. Yeah, right. Carlos Castaneda and Don Juan beg to differ. While Mr. Mares does make some good points in the book - which is why I give it 2 stars instead of one - it reeks of the social conditioning that Carlos Castaneda, Don Juan, Taisha Abelar, and Florinda Donner-Grau denounced in their teachings. It also speaks volumes that Mr. Mares wrote this book instead of his nagual woman, Marianne. Evidently she cannot create. If you want to read about true females, read Castaneda's works and those of his cohorts, Abelar and Donner-Grau.
