Book Description

How does change really happen? How do Christians grow? We sit in class after class, read book after book, and try as hard as we can to change; but somehow nothing ever really changes. We struggle with the same issues day after day, year after year, and wonder, Can anything ever really be different?

Scripture talks about transformation. Paul says we should be transformed by renewing our minds. How do we do that? What does it even mean?

In his new book, Unveiled: The Transforming Power of God’s Presence and Voice, Alan Smith seeks to unveil an all too often hidden aspect of the Christian faith. Through personal stories, solid biblical teaching, and practical application, Alan brings clarity to this essential truth: real, lasting transformation happens when we experience God’s presence and hear His voice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some of this book is great... some... Meh February 8, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I gave this four stars because the parts of this book that are good are VERY good.
He challenges the notion that we are supposed to disciple people by either education or rules. That hit home because every "discipleship" program I have ever attended focused on one or two of those areas -- and usually both:
Step 1: Study God's word. Learn about God more.
Ste 2: Apply what you learn -- which is usually disguised as a bunch of rules: read the bible more, pray more, fast, tithe, achieve a deeper walk.
But it doesn't seem to work. So you decide to try harder. Which doesn't work, so you try harder... after awhile, you become so disillusioned that you give up. But that lasts for only a time, and then you decide to give it one more go by trying even harder.
Interestingly, this methodology IS in the Bible... its what the Pharisees practiced.
Jesus didn't make disciples that way. The people who had their lives changed didn't do it by learning more, or trying harder... but by having a face to face encounter with Jesus.
This is pretty much the premise of the book, and it is powerful. I just wish that he wouldn't have been distracted by some rabbit holes he jumps down.
The book is worth reading. But not what it could have been.

5.0 out of 5 stars You're going to want to read it 3 times over!! January 11, 2012
Format:Paperback
If you find yourself thinking thoughts like, "What does a 'personal' relationship actually look like with God? I mean, I hear these people talking as if they really converse with God. He must not like talking with me because I've never heard Him." If you think, "I'm just this way" or "That part of me will never change" and its areas of your life you wish could or would change. Well, this book is an amazingly well laid out manual for activating your mind, soul and spirit to the power and presence of a Father God who cares about you more than you care about yourself!! Alan Smith has truly brought together the best insight and theology from several different camps in the Christian community on this subject. Every page is jam packed with Scriptures, his own life experiences and a consistent narrative that keeps you thoroughly engaged, learning and re-learning. He speaks from a humble and obedient heart that will immediately endear you to his words and ultimately to His Word. Get it, read it, share it!

5.0 out of 5 stars truth January 9, 2012
Format:Paperback
It seems like we are constantly being preached the rules. Do this, don't do that, and you will have a happy life and walk in faith. What we are then left with is the reality of our own imperfection. Alan brings the TRUTH behind what faith, Grace and redemption are all about....relationship! This book leads the reader down the path to the revelation that you have a personal relationship with God, the reality that he calls you by name. The truth, that it is not your "good behavior" that brings you closer to God, but your relationship with God that produces "good behavior" as a by-product. Hearing God and obedience to remain faithful to his word, the word he has SPOKEN to you, draws you nearer to God. Alan and the rest of the Freedom Ministry team at Gateway Church have challenged everything I ever believed about being a Christian, allowing me to walk in Freedom with Christ, as opposed to supposed "freedom" without him. This book is an excellent tool for helping to understand the truth in the Bible and the truth in our relationship with God.

To date, have purchased 102 copies of this book for gifting after reading a borrowed copy of UNVEILED just a few weeks ago! Was so hard not to highlight and dog-ear the pearls...there were so many!!

Among other personal enhanced skills, corporate worship will NEVER be the same. Personal prayer time will NEVER be the same again. I just want to pay it forward! Last full paragraph of Chapter 7, page 127....yes, please!!!!
Going back after Christmas to reread UNVEILED cover to cover and savor yet again.

That is all. Read it for yourself...enJOY and grow.

If you're looking for another powerless book that emphasizes:
1. What people do wrong and how far away from God's standards people are
2. How bad the world is becoming as a result of the wrong behavior
3. The low number of people who know what right and wrong are
4. Tons of biblical references proving what right behavior is and what wrong behavior is
5. Stories of what bad people do contrasted with what good people do and how blessed they are for doing good things
6. Closed with a plea for more people to change their mind about good and evil, commit to do right things, and live a happy life as a result

... then this book is not for you.

Everything in Christianity hinges on how people:
1. View God and how he interacts with creation
2. Respond to the Gospel of Christ and the power of his life, death, and resurrection
3. Know God, hear his voice, and allow his full power into our beings and experiences.
4. Respond to hearing God and His power to live in the fullness of knowing Him and who they are in relationship to Him.

Alan Smith is a master at walking people through their own journey of God unveiling the eyes of the heart so they can see who He is, who they are, and how he is fully available to do immeasurably more than they could ask or ever imagine.

I literally took the book and began a journey of memorizing every scriptural reference and praying through the contexts Alan walks us through. What a journey!!!

If you're looking for a powerful tool to walk you through seeing God, yourself, and the world more clearly - then this is for you.
If you're looking for a great resource to learn to discern God's voice most clearly - then this is for you.
