This review is from: Unveiling Your Hidden Power: Emma Curtis Hopkins' Metaphysics for the 21st Century (Paperback)
Emma Curtis Hopkins was known as the "teacher of teachers". She was the teacher of Nona Brooks, co-founder of Divine Science, Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, co-founders of Unity, and Ernest Holmes, founder of Religious Science (Science of Mind), among others.
Her teachings break down into 12 basic ideas, which all of her readily available writings cover at various depths. Some people have trouble with her Victorian style of writing, and this book corrects that problem. This is a clear and concise presentation of her basic teachings and is well presented for the modern reader. Exercises are included as well as Ms. Hopkins suggestions for daily spiritual practice. For those who would like to read the originals, try her Scientific Christian Mental Practice, which is more accessable than her High Mysticism.

I disagree with the other reviews. Emma Curtis Hopkins was an awesome teacher indeed. The difficulty for many in reading her writings is not the english, but rather that her work is mystical. The new rendering, while an impressive effort, is somewhat akin to a Readers Digest condensation. The message is often lost or confused.
I implore Truth students to read Ms Hopkins in her orignal language - not through the filter of someone else who may or may not comprehend her true meaning.

I read Emma Curtis Hopkin's "Scientific Christian Mental Practice" a few months ago and loved it, but the old-fashioned Victorian style English is not easy to read. Miller's rendering into modern English has created a great classic of metaphysical literature that should appeal to and inspire all students of New Thought/Science of Mind. The book is a practical handbook for prayer/meditation practice. One of my most highly recommended spiritual books of all time. Thank you Ruth.

An invaluable tool for unleashing one's bountiful twin wellsprings of confidence and optimism.,

Independent New Thought minister and metaphysical teacher Ruth L. Miller presents Unveiling Your Hidden Power: Emma Curtis Hopkins' Metaphysics for the 21st Century, a guide to the principles and practices metaphysical trailblazer Emma Curtis Hopkins, the "teacher of teachers" who instructed the founders of Unity, Divine Science, Church of Truth, and Religious Science back in the 1890s. Unveiling Your Hidden Power makes Hopkins' theories and discoveries fully accessible to modern audiences; chapters reveal the power of faith in God in Christ Jesus combined with harnessing one's mental focus through positive affirmation. "The strongest position you can take is always on the side of happiness and peace, as they are the Reality of our lives. If someone tells you they are well, and you cheerfully and innocently believe them, even when medical tests have suggested otherwise, they will be recovered by your faith. This is because confidence, or Faith, is a life principle. As God cannot fail, these cannot fail." The twelve lessons in science and metaphysics are an invaluable tool for unleashing one's bountiful twin wellsprings of confidence and optimism.

Ruth claims that this book is based on three of Emma's works: Scientific Christian Mental Practice, High Mysticism and the Resume of the latter, her purpose being to convert Emma's 'rhetorical Victorian english' into 21st century prose. The three books mentioned constitute around 700 pages, condensed by Ruth to about 160. But 90% of her book is based on just the first one of the three, which was written in plain, easily understandable english and which Ruth just lifts wholesale
almost word for word. 'High Mysticism' was deliberately written in mystical language - which was part of Emma's genius - and to interfere with or re-interpret it would entirely defeat the object Emma had in mind. However, my objection to this book is that Ruth inserts some subtle changes to Emma's work, subverting her message in order to pursue an agenda of her own. I will give one typical example. In the second chapter, Ruth (in Emma's words) describes the five universal denials of the science, plus the fact that most people also need to make one or two personal denials that relate to specific errors in an individual's thoughts. She mentions by way of example how Plato utilised the essential five, but undermined himself because of his belief that women were 'a failure of blind nature.' Emma's correction was that he failed to see that ' there was no failure in One Life, One Mind, One Good, THEREFORE THERE IS NO DISTINCTION OF SEX IN GOD.' (I have capitalized Emma's own words from 'Scientific Christian Mental Practice.) Ruth decides to change this phrase to 'there are no barriers to gender.' This is entirely the opposite of what Emma said. Emma is saying that the distinction of gender is itself an error, a falsehhood, based on the concept of matter having independent reality. Ruth is stating that gender is real, but that it should create no barrier. It is particularly ironic that whilst Emma is trying to point out how our own prejudices can undermine us, Ruth interposes a prejudice of her own, completely subverting Emma's message! My recommendation is that you DO NOT purchase this book, but instead go straight to 'Scientific Christian Mental Practice' as a complete introductory exposition of Emma's fundamental philosophy. It's probably cheaper, too!

Unveiling,

This review is from: Unveiling Your Hidden Power: Emma Curtis Hopkins' Metaphysics for the 21st Century (Paperback)
Unveiling Your Hidden Power is a contemporary "translation" of the metaphysical and spiritual writings and teachings of Emma Curtis Hopkins. If you didn't know anything about Emma Hopkins before reading this book, you might assume that she was just another contemporary author shining her light on the metaphysical path. But knowing that she lived from 1849-1925 we cannot help but feel a deep awe and respect for this woman's pioneering insights, courage, and Truth. Granted, she built her "science of mind" on others before her--but then, who hasn't stood on the shoulders of those who came before? She has been dubbed the "teacher of teachers" and is considered to be the founder of the New thought Movement, from which many notable and contemporary thinkers and spiritual denominations emerged.
Unveiling author, Ruth Miller, has done an excellent job of updating Hopkins' Victorian language without compromising the intent or meaning of the teachings. And those teachings are a call to unveil our spiritual nature--our Christ Mind, our God intelligence, our Truth, or however we choose to name it. To that end, Hopkins developed a Science of Mind: a comprehensive program consisting of twelve lessons that will lead anyone to an enlightened state of being, provided they practice. Practical and profound, Unveiling Your Hidden Power does us a great service by preserving a truly innovative spiritual manual for living in accordance with our higher self. With the plethora of self-improvement information available in our modern world, it is a welcome relief to take time to read this book and savor the "real thing:" a genuine voice of wisdom guiding us along the path of human potential. |
