5.0 out of 5 stars The German equivalent of Depeche Mode( a good thing!!! ), October 3, 2004
This review is from: Unversed in Love (Audio CD)
If you've been reading the reviews for other De/Vision albums, you're probably noticing a lot of paralells and comparisons to the Synthpop Gods, Depeche Mode. You've probably also noticed that many MANY other synthpop bands get this same treatment that is often very much off base. This time however, those comparisons couldn't be more relevant.

My love of DM is the reason I discovered De/vision and the whole synthpop genre in the first place. I had never truly realized just how much great stuff there was out there that represented this style of music, and I'm still discovering more even today. With that being said, De/Vision by far is the absolute BEST band I have discovered that carries on the DM tradition of dark, moody, very well written songs paired with haunting melodies and booming, adrenaline driven synths. Unversed in Love is DV's second album and is what I consider part of the classic first four albums preceded by World Without End, followed by Antiquity and Fairyland. All four of these albums are unique works and yet similar, being that they all are the epitome of dark yet also club friendly synth. Also, they all contain the singles that are featured on Zehn, which was their 'greatest hits/singles album' during that time. The best description of this period of DV sound would be something most reminiscent of DM's Violator, but anything of DM released from 1984 until 1991 would best suffice what the classic De/Vision sound is all about. All of the later DV albums that I own are also amazing but just like what DM did on Ultra and Exciter; their own later works, they toned down the synths and mellowed out a little with slower songs and dabble a bit with the addition of guitars. I guess it's safe to assume that if you enjoy Depeche Mode, you'll also love this band.

On it's own, Unversed in Love is one of the more emotionally charged and sentimental albums in DV's lovely collection( though they all are ). Although the sentiments of anti-religion( One of DV's distinguishing themes that prove that they are NOT simply DM copycats ) are included with "Free from Cares", there are many tender and very touching songs. This is more than partly because of the presence of the beautiful ballad "Dress me when I bleed"( how's THAT for an unconventional lyric in a love ballad?!?! ) and the powerful melancholy of "Moments we shared", which can bring tears to your eyes, given the right moment to listen to it. The other standout of the album is "Blue moon", which, although was not included on Zehn, is a huge DV classic. So much so that they actually remade the song and re-released it on one of their newer albums called Void. Dark, ambient, and very dancable. Other great songs include the bittersweet "Love me again" and the club friendly "At Night","Skip this page" and "Time".

So really you simply can't go wrong with De/vision if you love Depeche Mode, but even if you don't like DM and simply like the style of music, still give DV a try. The vocals are much softer and emotional than DM's Dave Gahan, more along the lines of Martin Gore, with a german twist. And also, even though the band is German, the songs are all sung in English and the vocals are not deep and harsh like many other German bands. I now own all of De/Vision's albums with the exception of Monosex, Two, and 6 Feet Underground. I have yet to own a DV album that I didn't love. It's nearly impossible to make a recommendation for the first time buyer other than Zehn, which covers a good range of the early material. But in terms of actual albums try this if you enjoy the more sentimental romantic songs( or the newer Devolution album if you like your emotions with softer more toned down synths ) or get Antiquity( my favorite DV album so far ) if you simply want some fast paced, mind blowing synthpop music in the tradition of DM's Music for the Masses and Black Celebration.

3.0 out of 5 stars sweet synth music, October 30, 2005
This review is from: Unversed in Love (Audio CD)
I love de/vision They should be played on the radio now. Know one sounds as close to depeche as these guys. However they are just as good sometimes. Very hooky melodies same dark sound as depeche. The lead singers voice is beautiful. This album is not there best but its still a 10.
