This moving novel takes place in Sweden. The reader tries to understand who would carry out a horrific deed and then ovbserve the authorities as they seek identify and apprehend the guilty person.

A parent's worst nightmare is described as a mother gets off a train that is delayed at a station. She wants to make a call without waking up her six-year-old daughter. The conductor calls for everyone to board and the mother is destracted and doesn't hear. When the train arrives at its final destination, the child is missing.

When the police interview the mother, their first thought is that it is a domestic kidnapping and attempt to locate the child's father.

Even though the mother's history of abuse makes the father seem like a likely target, investigative analyst, Fredrika Bergman, a new member of the investigatory team, and not fully appreciated in the male dominated police force, has other thoughts. She begins looking into the possibility that if the child's father isn't the kidnapper, who might be.

With excellent dialogue and psychological insight into the investigators, their thoughts and family life, the reader observes their reaction when their investigation takes a new turn. This makes the characters more sympathetic and for us to want them to succeed in their search for the kidnapper.

"Unwanted" is a literary sensation in Sweden and provides the reader with a compelling story that is literate, with characters who come to life as we read.

4 1/2 stars moving up to 5.

In her debut mystery Unwanted, Kristina Ohlsson demonstrates a keen sense of just how flawed her characters can be while still being readably engaging. Her unencumbered writing style also makes for a very quick read. In general, police procedurals can be the friend of most mystery readers because they validate (or challenge) the reader's thought process by offering periodic case updates, plot summaries, and various deductive speculations. But procedurals can also tax a reader's cognition with vast numbers of characters' names. For this, Ohlsson adds a very clever heuristic device by introducing a main character who happens to be very bad with names.

To varying extents, the victims, protagonists, and perpetrators all share the attribute in the title. Seemingly abandoned children are being abducted and killed in Sweden, and each of the members the federal crime squad in Stockholm must deal with their own uninvited vocational and personal circumstances to solve the crime. PhD candidate turned police investigator Fredrica debates staying on an investigation team that does not welcome her civilian roots and highly analytical style; concurrently she must decide what she really wants in her life - continue an impossible romantic relationship or adopt a child of her own? Her colleague Detective Investigator Peder is saddled with new twin boys, a post-partum depressed wife, and a sexual compulsion, none of which he entirely wants, and his right brain does not play well with Fredrica's left. And their legendary boss Detective Chief Investigator Alex faces the unexpected challenge of managing this team of disparate thinkers around an unusually complicated missing child case.

Format: Hardcover
Sara Sebastiansson steps off to make a phone call during a train delay to let her male friend know she and her young daughter, Lilian, would be a little late. When she hangs up, she realizes that the train is pulling away without her, with Lilian still on the train. By the time she catches a taxi and meets the train in the next city, Lilian is gone. The police are immediately called and a search immediately commences.

Alex Recht is the lead detective on the case and he has investigated a lot of missing children cases over the years. He immediately begins looking into Sara's life and believes her estranged husband Gabriel could be behind Lilian's disappearance, but he and his team are having no luck finding Gabriel.

When Lilian is found dead in an ambulance bay at a hospital, Alex kicks up his search for Gabriel. His detectives, Fredrika and Peder, are both intelligent and leap deeper into the investigation. Fredrika wants to find out who the young woman was who asked Sara for help with her dog after her phone call at the train station, believing she either saw something or was involved. Peder delves deeply into Gabriel's life, trying to figure out where he could be hiding.

Meanwhile, a baby is taken out of it's pram at it's home and hours later found dead in the bathroom of another home. Now, the team realizes they may have been looking at the investigation all wrong and valiantly try to piece the evidence and clues they have together and find out who the killer is and why he is writing "Unwanted" on the children's foreheads after he kills them.

Unwanted is a phenomenal detective novel set in Sweden with complex and riveting characters and twisted and chilling plot. Unwanted is a page-turner that will keep readers up well past midnight. I can't wait to see what Kristina has in store for her readers next.
