Sublime, August 30, 2004
This review is from: Unwired: Acoustic Music From Around the World (Audio CD)
I've bought quite a few of these Rough Guide albums. The first one I got was Mali&Guinea, which I loved, and it just rolled on from there. The international compilations are always good, especially if you like diversity. A problem with Rough Guides sometimes is that they try to include 'contemporary' music from various countries that has a local rather than international slant. But as we all know, folk and techno drumbeats usually don't work together.
To cut to the chase, I love this album because it is all acoustic. It is a very relaxed album, with a collection of outstanding artists such as Baaba Maal, Toumani Diabate and Cesaria Evoria. I think the best song is number five by Duquende. It is sublime.
In conclusion, while I'm sure there are one or two dodgy numbers here, I still give it five out of five because it has so many great songs.
