Amazon.com Product Description

The Unwired Technology UFR8082 14-channel Family Radio Service radio has a host of features that make staying in touch with family and friends easy and convenient. Its 14 channels and 38 subcodes provide up to 532 frequency options for clearer transmissions. There are various scan modes to ensure you get the clearest signal possible: the CTCSS subcode mode scrolls through all 38 available frequencies, the monitor button scans and monitors all channels, and the channel select allows you to scroll through the available 14 channels. The field-strength indicator lets you know the reception condition. In addition, it has five memory locations for frequently used settings.

Powered by four AAA batteries, the UFR8082 has a range of up to two miles. Other features include voice-activated transmission (VOX) that allows hands-free use, a talk confirmation tone that notifies the other party to respond, and a key lock that prevents accidental changing of settings. The UFR8082 comes with a detachable belt clip and wrist strap.

2.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for., November 4, 2000

I figured that I couldn't go wrong with an inexpensive radio, but I was wrong. The radios actually function just fine in terms of range and clarity. The problem is that they are just poorly made. The first time one was dropped (and yes they will all eventually be dropped) it kind of exploded and did not go back together well. The battery location and means of holding in the batteries is much less than ideal, and just not well designed. I never tried the ear bud microphone because it was too poorly made to fit properly in my ear without pain. In sum, this was a cheap pair of radios that have confirmed the wisdom of shelling out the extra money for some well-made Motorollas. At least I have an extra set of radios when the need arises.

This review is from: Unwired Technology UFR8082 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radios (Pair) (Electronics)
I picked these up to replace a set that I bought prior to 2-way consumer radios coming with 14 channels, let alone 38 sub channels. I have to say that I'm very impressed with the clarity and range on these. I been skiing with them several times now and have had no problems getting in contact with others in the group that are often clear across the mountain. And now that I have so many different channel combinations I don't get annoying interference. The radios are compact and lightweight. The only thing that I see as a drawback to these is the size of the buttons. That being said, I would recommend these as a great value. When buying electronics, keep this in mind: Most companies (whether it's Motorola, Panasonic, Unwired Technology, etc.) use contract manufacturers to build their products. Additionally, most companies use standard components when building these products. So, it's very likely that the inside of a product from xyz company resembles abc's product. Using contract manufacturers and standard components helps companies improve margins and get products to market quicker.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great performance, budget price., March 7, 2001

Just got mine yesterday, and tried them out at the slopes today. They performed as well as my other (more expensive) Motorola T289 and TA280SLK models. The privacy codes were compatible with the Motorola's. The channel scan feature is useless as you have to hold two buttons down simultaneously to scan. The 'roger beep' is a nice touch. The LED backlighting on the LCD is 'cheesy' looking compared to the Motorola's nice blue EL backlighting, but then again, I won't burst into tears if one of these budget radios gets lost.

BTW, if your in the market for FRS radios in general, make sure they have the privacy code feature. This doesn't mean people can't listen in on you, but at least you won't hear other peoples chatter in crowded areas (like ski areas and malls).
