The Castle family have always helped each other run the stalls and cafes in the seaside town of St David's Well. When Audrey finally marries her sweetheart, Wilf Thomas, she begins to regret a promise she made a long time ago to her mother and sister Marge. Audrey is determined that she and Wilf will have time to enjoy their longed-for married life, but when her future dramatically changes, Audrey is even more determined to strike out on her own. War evacuee sisters, Maud and Myrtle have also made an unwise promise in the past - never to leave each other - and when Myrtle begins to hint at her own independence, their relationship is in jeopardy. Despite the shadow of war, the inhabitants of St David's Well are determined once again to bring joy and laughter to the day trippers who travel in their hordes to the town to forget about the hardships of war.
