5.0 out of 5 stars Very Cool Pop Punk Music
Out of all of the pop punk CDs I own (there aren't many) this is definitely the best. There is lots of vibe, something many new CDs today are lacking, a kind of SoCal youth vibe. From first listen on the audio samples, you may think Scott's vocals sound like Tom's from Blink-182, but in truth there is almost no similarity. Another strong point is the closings of the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Soulful and touching. Great album.
This is a painfully depressing album to listen to. In all my sessions of listening to it I have never once felt that bad because of an album. It's such a powerful collection of songs. I sincerely doubt a punk band can become and more emotional. It's a great achievement to the genre. The lyrics are powerful and hit deep within. Musically it has an epic feel to it(check out...

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Cool Pop Punk Music, June 17, 2000
This review is from: Unwritten Law (Audio CD)
Out of all of the pop punk CDs I own (there aren't many) this is definitely the best. There is lots of vibe, something many new CDs today are lacking, a kind of SoCal youth vibe. From first listen on the audio samples, you may think Scott's vocals sound like Tom's from Blink-182, but in truth there is almost no similarity. Another strong point is the closings of the songs, which aren't typical punk or rock endings, they have little melodic tunes while the rest of the band is finishing the song, especially at the end of Harmonic. Yet another point is how the songs vary throughout the album. They can be very poppy (Sorry, Cailin) or very punky (Close Your Eyes, Teenage Suicide) or downright smart and inspirational (California Sky, Genocide/418). The guitars have some amazingly great melodies, especially the melancholy beginning to Harmonic, the driving chorus of Sorry, and the poppy background of Cailin. All of the tracks are standouts, seriously, but my personal favorites include Cailin, California Sky, Genocide/418 (featuring Mike Einziger and Brandon Boyd of Incubus), Harmonic, Lonesome, Close Your Eyes, and Sorry. The drums are an amazing part of the album, and you can actually hear Wade's talent throughout the greatly mastered CD. Look for Oz Factor and also buy some albums by NoFX, Millencolin, Blink-182 (Chesire Cat, please) or 10 Foot Pole.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh God, I Cannot Say How Much I Love This CD, May 28, 2000
By
Todd Ballard (Orange, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unwritten Law (Audio CD)
Unwritten Law has to be one of my favorite bands ever. Their self-titled release has to be my favorite of everything they've ever put out, and this includes Oz Factor which is constantly in my CD player. Every song is just amazing, especially California Sky, Lonesome, Cailin, Sorry, Teenage Suicide, and Close Your Eyes. California Sky reminds me a lot of growing up in Monterrey, California, skating and surfing, possibly my two favorite activities as a kid and now. Lonesome has an awesome bass line strung out on punk riffs. Cailin has scratches, poppy guitars, and some really cool vocals. Sorry is really funny, Teenage Suicide has a really cool beginning, and Close Your Eyes is a classic punk song, with great lyrics. Wade's drumming is really good, especially the occaisional solo. The rest of the band provides a perfect shell around the drums, and this makes Unwritten Law the perfect melodic pop-punk fourpiece. And they just happen to be my favorite pop-punk fourpiece. They're great guys, too, real down to earth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good So-Cal punk, April 12, 2001
This review is from: Unwritten Law (Audio CD)
This CD is incredible. Unwritten Law takes every espect of So-Cal rock and blends it into one excellent cd. This is probably the best punk rock cd I have heard since NOFX's Decline. Don't compare this with NOFX though, Unwritten Law has their very own unique sound. Every song explodes with an energy and raw uncut sound that no one can compare to. These guys are very talented musicians too. This isn't you usual underground bar chord punk, this music has serious depth. Harmonic, Teenage Suicide, and Before I Go really shows the talent that the band has. Genocide/418 is a great 2 song set featuring Brandon Boyd and Mike Einziger (2 of the best musicians of rock) of Incubus. Of course, there are some really hardcore punk songs on this CD too, I haven't mentioned most of my favorite songs. Anyone that likes punk rock and music that has depth and meaning will love this CD. This one will be played over and over in my CD player until the new Tool cd is released. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT HAPPENED!!, March 26, 2002
This review is from: Unwritten Law (Audio CD)
WOW!!!!!!!!!!! This is TOTALLY REFINED Unwritten Law. Anyone who has Blue Room, and Oz Factor would know their old sound, which is slightly unrefined and a bit messy at times. Don't get me wrong, Unwritten Law has always been good. I say "What Happened?" because something extraordinary has grown out of this band!!! This CD is IN DEPTH. There's no other Pop-Punk like it! (I usually don't listen to Pop Punk and this is one my TOP CDs) Unwritten Law has truly hit the top this time, but that doesn't mean they won't continue to skyrocket in talent. Ok, here's a breakdown of Unwritten Law's sound. At first, they seem a bit like any old punk band, but they're not, as proved by Cailin, Before I go, and Genocide. Cailin is amazingly poppy compared to their previous work but I LOVE that song!!! Coffin Text is a good smash of what UL punk is. UL is mostly harmonic, as demonstrated in the first song, Harmonic (haha). Teenage Suicide would seem like a depressing song, but it flows with so much energy and the guitar work is amazing!!! That song, despite it's melancholy lyrics, really gets me energized. UL can best be described as a newly refined, harmonic, deep, talented, energetic band, who has come a long way. The songs are so catchy but not annoyingly catchy. It's a CD that makes you feel GOOD about yourself. (Surprising considering the sadness in some songs) Pick up Elva While you're at it, although it is not as good as this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Band, May 14, 2000

First of all, this CD's awesome and you should get it. Unwritten Law's music is kind of hard to describe. They got some music and there music isn't too hard....just hard enough. Whatever they're doing, it sounds very good. My favorite songs are Teenage Suicide and Harmonic.

This review is from: Unwritten Law (Audio CD)
I saw the video for teenage suicide and loved that song then the video for California Sky. I definatly had to go get the cd cause those were really great songs. Once i bought this CD, i couldn't stop listening to it, simply incredable!! What i dont get it why this band doesnt get that much publicity, and when i saw the case(more of a secret case or somethin) i was surprised. Well anyways this is one of the best CD i own. BUY IT!!! IT'S WORTH THE MONEY!! ROCK ON UL!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing album from an Amazing band, October 11, 2003
By
Mike (Louisiana aka hell) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unwritten Law (Audio CD)
A lot of people think that Unwritten Law step aside from their "Punk Image" with Elva, but for me this is the album that they kind of broke away from that. That's not to say that is a bad thing. With this CD Unwritten Law cut the strings off and freed themselves from all the "punk rules" to make an AWSOME album. Even though in my heart of hearts I still believe Unwritten Law to be a punk band. It's just with this cd they've evolved BIG TIME! While it does have a lot of punk in it, it also has a lot of metal, New Metal, and the song Lonesome kind of sounds Funk to me, but when all this is rolled together it just makes for some really good Rock N Roll. I can't say that this is their best album because you would have to go a long way to beat Blue Room, but if this album isn't better than Blue Room it's sure as hell is right up there with it. There is such a wide ranch of songs on this cd, and it proves what a talented band Unwritten Law is. You've got everything on this cd, from songs like Cailin (which is a love rock song) to songs like Teenage Suicide (which is a really fast pop punk song). This album was sort of their "transition" album. Which is why I guess it's a self-titled album. And I think the reason they did this was because they didn't want to sound like EVERY other punk band out there that sounds or tries to sound like Green Day's Dookie. A lot of people call Unwritten Law sellouts but to me there is nothing less punk than putting rules on it, but who cares about labels? Personally I don't think Unwritten Law can make a bad album (even though I would say Elva is my least favorite, but I still liked it) but there is just something really special about this album that I can't just put into words. I can honestly say this is one of my fifteen favorite albums of all time. What else can I say other than this is an amazing album from an amazing band, and if you call Unwritten Law "sellouts" then you have one of two problems: You don't know how to think for yourself or you just suck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Damn Swell, November 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Unwritten Law (Audio CD)
Despite what I have read from others, I think they sound very different from another San Diego punk band that I will not name, but many late comers will recognize from running naked on MTV. I would say they sound more like Pennywise if I had to compare them to another band. Harmonic, Underground, Sorry, and Lonesome are probably the best tracks though most people will recognize it only by Cailin. A very solid CD, with the weakest song being 418 (for some reason it is not given its own track, but is shoved on to the end of Genocide) which by itself is not a bad song. I also recommend Oz Factor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Awsome CD by UNWRITTEN LAW!!!, February 23, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Unwritten Law (Audio CD)
This is one of my favorite CDs. Awsome guitar solos, fast beats, excellent drums and vocals. Scott(vocals), Wade(drums), Rob(guitar), and Steve(guitar) all demonstrate how talented they all are again in their 3rd CD. Some songs are punk, but others have a pop sound. Track 10(Close Your Eyes) is a classic punk song. There's no way you can like punk, and hate Unwritten Law. I've listened to this CD a lot since I bought it and I still don't get tired of it. (if you buy this CD and hate them there's something wrong with you). also try No Use For a Name, MXPX, NOFX, Less Than Jake, Goldfinger, and The Vandls.
