5.0 out of 5 stars Funny January 3, 2012
This show is hilarious. I love it. I don't look at it like it has an agenda. I just watch it and enjoy the humor and the story line. Will A. and Christina Applegate have great chemistry and work well off of one another. It deals with very real issues that parent's face in today's world with hilarious commentary to back it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't Stay Up October 24, 2011
NBC's Up All Night has been a must-see since its earliest promos. Starring Christina Applegate, Will Arnett, and Maya Rudolph, the blockbuster cast is reason enough to tune in. But given so much star appeal, why does the show's maiden voyage seem so lackluster? Perhaps the been-there-done-that premise is to blame: a young couple gets pregnant, which throws a wrench in the gears of workingwoman, Reagan's (Applegate) career as a TV producer and forcing her husband (Arnett) into the role of stay-at-home dad. Rudolph makes her appearance as a bombastic Oprah/Queen Latifah hybrid, the host of the talk show that employs Applegate's character.

The series does not find a solid footing in its infancy, but it squeezes a few laughs out of a fair dose of bleeped potty-mouth humor. It functions as more of a dramedy; we emotionally connect to the characters, which is refreshing in a sitcom. It is reminiscent of How I Met Your Mother in that sense, although it lacks the sharp and efficient writing. Created by Emily Spivey (Saturday Night Live) and produced by comedy juggernaut Lorne Michaels, quality material shouldn't be in short supply. That's why it comes as a surprise that Up All Night feels so lukewarm.

These are characters that will only get better as episodes pass and we witness what sets them apart from the actors' previous roles. As it is, they feel a bit like placeholders until the show figures out what it wants to be. Like 30 Rock before it, it might take several seasons for the show to connect brilliantly on every level. We have faith in all the parts of the whole. Now, we wait for the whole to manifest itself into something unique, with a little more punch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Cast Line-up Keeps Me Up At Night August 20, 2012
Format:DVD
`Up All Night - Season One' is a brilliant half-hour sitcom, consisting of 24 episodes, featuring a dynamic mixture of well-known television stars that come together to form a show about a married couple and their newly formed emergence into parenthood. Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live), Christina Applegate (Married with Children), and Will Arnett (Arrested Development) share a setting that bristles with the chemistry required in any successful show.

The show's style and performance falls into step with the growing popularity of sitcoms that deliver wit and humor without laugh tracks. Much like `The Office', `Parks and Recreations', and `Arrested Development', the show's bread-and-butter is in giving the audience a up-close and personal feel that makes you love the characters and laugh with them, not at them. In this, the show's creator (Emily Spivey) succeeds, creating a series that will hopefully achieve the wide-spread popularity of other sitcoms that embrace this format.

However, in competing for airing time with so many ongoing shows of this style, I can't help but feel like the show puts too much pressure on the three characters that Rudolph, Applegate, and Arnett play. In most show formats, this burden is shared by a much larger cast, allowing wide audiences to find characters within the show that they can identify with. Casting a narrower scope, 'Up All Night's characters carry the large burden of appealing to viewers of prime-time television.

That being said, the announcement of the show's renewal of a second season of 13 episodes is not so much a cause for concern as it is an opportunity for the producers/writers to concentrate the show's best qualities into half of the total air time.
