having heard the author speak on two different occasions, i found 'up by roots' to be a continuation of comprehensive, practical, and clearly-stated information geared toward landscape architects. a major advantage of this book is both the breadth and depth of information included.
the only thing i take issue with is the fact that the book (at least the one i purchased off amazon) is published in black and white. i feel that for a book such as this, graphically-heavy and to be used as a reference for design professionals, color definitely matters. if publishing in color is cost-prohibitive (understandable) and BW graphics are the only way to make the book accessible (to students for instance) then please just clearly advertise the book as such.
