Editorial Reviews

See and Hear the Master at Work! Classic Buddy Rich tunes performed live in 1982. Never-before released, includes special audio tracks and bonus CD. The technique, musicality, intensity, and dedication that Buddy brings to music he plays leave many saying: "He is the greatest drummer in the world - a genius - there will never be another Buddy Rich." In 1982, Buddy did three shows over three days as a pilot for a jazz television series with guests Mel Tormé, Gerry Mulligan, Woody Herman, Ray Charles, Anita O' Day, Stan Getz, and Lionel Hampton. This DVD spotlights six of Buddy's classic tunes that he played with the band during that show. We re-edited these tunes to focus every possible camera on Buddy throughout the entire tune, so you'll see the "master at work" at all times. Not only do you get the standard audio mix, you get an additional two audio mixes: one with the band hot so you can play along, with Buddy in the background; the other with Buddy hot so you can hear the nuances in his time, feel, and technique. Buddy's playing is unique; he plays not just with his hands and feet, but also with every fiber of his being. Song Tracks: - Love For Sale - Bugle Call Rag - West Side Story - Birdland - Greensleeves - Dancing Men Special Features: - Rehearsal footage - Alternate take of Birdland - Interview - Select slow motion - Buddy hot audio mix - Band hot audio mix Total Content: 116 min

This is awesome. This is what we Buddy Rich fans want, it is right there with the best.
Very interesting features also. It leaves me dying to get the Buddy Rich Show DVD when that comes out. That will have Buddy with the best- Mel Torme, Ray Charles, Lionel Hampton, Stan Getz, and more.
Where has this been all our lives? It should have been out in 1982.
Good things come to those who wait.
This is a must have for Buddy fans.

This was a video that I had great anticipation for. Generally speaking it's pretty good.....especially Buddy. Seeing the various angles of him and being able to 'hot mix' his drums is a great idea and very beneficial.

Here's the rub. The band is severely average. When a big band is wailing, the lead trumpet player has an obligation to lead it! The guy in this band is nearly a joke. I don't recall ever hearing so many bad notes from Buddy's band as this character blew! Now to be fair, I was spoiled by the "Killer Force" section with Ross Konikoff, Dean Pratt and the fabulous Dave Stahl----1976 and 1977. Those guys played Buddy's book like there was no tomorrow! The 'Killer Force' was an incredible era in Buddy's career.

If you are contemplating a Buddy video for the pure enjoyment of his band get the Buddy Rich 'Live in '78" concert. It features a much better band. The views of Buddy are also excellent in this video.

Concerning "Up Close"-----if you can get past the mediocre band the Buddy stuff is great.

One of the most amazing things about Buddy's drumming was what he would do, often subtly, in support of the band and the tune. And on the back cover of this DVD it rightfully says: "Buddy's playing is unique, he plays not just with his hands and feet, but with every fiber of his being." I couldn't agree more. I was very glad when "Live in '78" was released on DVD because much of this masterful technique was visible and audible. With "Buddy Rich Up Close" from 1982, this aspect of his playing is even more discernable, because we the viewer are able to select from the menu the "Buddy Hot Audio Mix," in which every single note Buddy plays can clearly be heard, and seen, while the audio of the band is in the background. And, we are treated to no less than 5 solos by Buddy on this DVD: Bugle Call Rag, Greensleeves, Dancing Men, and 2 solos on West Side Story! My personal favorite segment: Buddy's first solo on West Side Story, very relaxed and groovin' and those amazing left hand grace notes he uses at the end of this solo to signal the band back in, and continues using to drive and support the song. Incredible. To sum up, I agree with the reviewer who said: "The quality is state of the art and Buddy is in top form. Nothing out there gives the focus on BR like this. A must have for BR fans."

Oh how I wish we had quality footage of Buddy like this from the 1960's!!

Fantastic dvd. I have just about every other available commercial dvd/vhs of Buddy and his band and this ranks up there as one of the absolute best. Buddy and the band were hot and at the top of there game here. The visuals and sound are top notch and this is packed with nice features which allow close up looks and differentiating sound options at the man himself, his musicality and technique + the band. If there is any thing negative to say its that the set list is rather short or atleast seems that way and this makes you want more. That being said I would rather have a short set list of this quality than a longer one of lesser quality. I also don't know what happened but there was supposed to be another release of something called
"The Buddy Rich Show" which was filmed over a 3 day period with Buddy and a bunch of greats but apparently never made it out. Perhaps some legal stuff... just hope it some day soon does see the light of day?

This great DVD is like nothing else we have of Buddy Rich in action. Video and audio choices let us focus on what we want to see and hear. The quality is state of the art and Buddy is in top form. Nothing out there gives the focus on BR like this. A must have for BR fans.

This is classic material with even more features. It also makes for a great challenge play along and I really enjoy just listening to the (almost)isolated drums which was cool of the producers to mix and throw in. That is if you buy the one that has the audio CD as well. it is on the audio CD.I really wish I could buy that production that is talked about called "The Buddy Rich show"? A three show set filmed and never edited set of shows and songs featuring different artists? They have a good trailer of it in the menu of this DVD. It is in features and they call it "The Buddy Rich show" where Buddy has his own jazz show with the world's best. I searched for this. It was advertised that it came out in 2009. Anybody know anything about what happened to it? I cannot find it.
the Buddy Up close so far to me is one of the best Buddy Rich production jams ever. If you like Buddy's drumming and big jazz look no further. AAA+

Up Close offers a one-of-a-kind examination of the man who liked to call himself the World's Greatest Drummer--he may not be that, with so many great drummers out there in every field and genre of music, but he never fails to mesmerize us with his high caliber of technique and musical sense. This CD/DVD offers a thorough approach to studying Rich's skills with some great footage of his playing and a variety of interviews with people who knew him, his personality, and his playing style. Highly recommended.
