Over the years, the Gin Blossoms created the whimsical “no chocolate cake” rule for crew members who tried to hit on the band’s considerable female fanbase on their tours. As it’s the title of their highly anticipated 429 Records debut, No Chocolate Cake is more a playful… Read more in Amazon's Gin Blossoms Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Short, but sweet..., December 25, 2001

David Goodwin (Westchester, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Up & Crumbling (Audio CD)
This EP "tested the waters," so to speak, for New Miserable Experience, and while it's both short, and contains a few songs contained on that album, its exclusive tracks are excellent. Despite being formally OOP, apparently, it can be found *everywhere*, and is well worth the $5 that's usually charged.

4.0 out of 5 stars Get the albums!, September 11, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Up & Crumbling (Audio CD)
The Gin Blossom's first album, New Miserable Experience, is destined to become a minor classic being as it is the almost perfect distillation of jangle, swagger and angst in a catholic style. The plaintive angellic rasp of heartbroken vocals laid over chiming raunch, evokes all the greats but with a distinctive edge of youthful desperation, despair, anger and excitement. That one of the principals then killed himself comes as little or no surprise as there is a definite sound of someone losing the will to continue in this world of broken hearts and desolation. Despite this the album is uplifting, with soaring harmonies, guitars that crunch and fizz, and even a touch of humour as the band show off their country licks and ways with a cynical lyric "....you can't call it cheating 'cos she looks a lot like you". Get the album as the e.p. only gives you half the story and the extra tracks arn't really that great.
