Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

One by one, the children choose from a plethora of handsome steeds: horses, zebras, ostriches, boars and bears, assembled in the ring of a merry-go-round. Rand's luscious watercolor technique adds to the momentum of the swirling merry-go-round, a dazzling array of vibrant colors. A diversity of phonetic sound, coupled with the staggered meter of the merry-go-round grinding to a halt, mirrors the feelings of ambivalence that children experience when such a wonderful ride is over. The combination of Martin and Archembeault's masterfully written and highly readable verse and Rand's characteristically rich illustrations makes this a rhythmic, raucous read-aloud. Ages 5-8.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2 A little girl joins other multi-ethnic children on a merry-go-round, and they seemingly take turns narrating a rhythmic poem describing the thrill and joy of the ride. This is similar in structure and concept to Donald Crews' Carousel (Greenwillow, 1982), but here the multiple viewpoints tend to confuse, and the poem is not particularly distinctive or memorable. Splendidly decorated, brilliantly colored animals fill the pages: there are zebras, frogs, elephants, and gaily caparisoned horses bursting with energy. This book lacks the power of the trio's Knots on a Counting Rope (1987), and is also less successful than their Barn Dance (1986) or The Ghost - Eye Tree (1985; all Holt). Yet it is a representation for children of an adventure that once experienced is rarely forgotten. Leda Schubert, Vermont Dept . of Education, Montpelier

4.0 out of 5 stars Merry-Go-Round Magic, August 25, 2000
By
Book Lover (Bloomington, IN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Up and Down on the Merry-Go-Round (Paperback)
The authors, John Archambault and Bill Martin, Jr., and the illustrator, Ted Rand, are treasures. I'd encourage you to check out their other titles (Barn Dance and Hullabaloo ABC are favorites).

The rhythm of Up and Down on the Merry-Go-Round captures the excitement and happiness of a child on a merry-go-round ride, and is fun to read aloud. The brightly colored, detailed, and imaginitive depiction of an old-fashioned carousel are irresistible, both to me and my child.

I only wish this title were still available in hardcover. My two-year-old resists returning this book to the library, and requests it be read to him (often several times in a row) many times a week. I'm about to order a softcover copy, but I don't think it's likely to hold up to the use it will see. A must for every young merry-go-round lover.

My daughter loves this book! The illustrations are glorious and the rhythm of the book has made it easy for her to memorize-that and the fact that we read it at least once a day.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Kid favorite, July 3, 2011
This review is from: Up and Down on the Merry-Go-Round (Paperback)
This book was in a "storytelling kit" at our local library. My 2 1/2 yr old twin granddaughters loved it--had to read it at least 20 times. So--ordered them both one! It's their favorite.
