Book Description

4 and up
Best-selling author and illustrator Robert Munsch and Michael Martchenko team up to create this comical adventure about an energetic little girl named Anna who loves to climb!

Anna ignores her mother's constant earning to "Be careful! Don't climb!," even after she falls down from scaling the refrigerator and the side of the house. One day, Anna manages to climb all the way up a palm tree, but the descent leaves her frantically hanging from a leaf. When her parents come to the rescue, the tables are quickly turned when her mother and father are the ones hanging from the tree instead!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

reS-Gr 3-In this zany story, Anna likes to climb on the refrigerator and her dresser and go "up, up, up" even though she falls down "ow ouch!" When her parents protest, she goes outside, where it's okay to climb, and climbs the highest tree she can find. Sitting in the top, she goads her parents to come after her; when they fall down trying, she relents and climbs down to wrap them in "enormous Band-Aids" and repeats what they've been telling her: "Be CAREFUL-don't CLIMB!" The humor is in the timing, the changing size and placement of the text, and the silliness of the plot. The watercolor illustrations are also over-the-top with ridiculously exaggerated points of view, comical-looking characters, and little jokes, such as a tiny treetop animal watching TV or stars flying off Daddy's injured bottom. This is sure to be a hit, especially with this team's fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Robert Munsch scores again!, March 13, 2001

This review is from: Up, Up, Down! (Hardcover)
Robert Munsch and Michael Martchenko have teamed up for another OUTSTANDING children's book. Kids of all ages will enjoy the tree climbing adventures of Anna. Although Anna is told by her parents not to climb, she continues to climb anything in and outside the house. It was like being reunited with an old friend when I read Munsch's favorite kid response come out of Anna's mouth,'No, no, no, no, no!' The details found in the illustrations always amaze me as I recognize pieces from past Munsch/Martchenko creations. Anna makes every parent smile as she works to help her wounded parents.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disrespectful to authority, February 19, 2011
This review is from: Up, Up, Down! (Paperback)
We received this book as a gift. After reading it, I promptly threw it away. It is about a little girl, Anna, who is disobedient, defiant, and disrespectful to her parents. I don't want my children or any children reading it in my home. In the end, Anna the naughty little girl wins. Not a good moral.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Recommendation by Jordyn, May 20, 2010
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Up, Up, Down! (Paperback)
Up, Up, Down is about a girl climbing up the tree. There was very silly things in the tree. The mom falls and bumps her head. hehehehehe! The same thing happens to the dad. He almost got it! hehehehe! The kids bring humongous band-aids so the parents can't walk talk or hold the kids or take their clothes off!!!! I like it because it is so funny. My favorite part was when the kids brought the big band-aids and they were wrapped around. I like all Robert Munsch books!
