Book Description

In Up, Down, or Sideways, Mark Sanborn, author of the bestselling book The Fred Factor, prepares you for life’s inevitable cycles of up and down—and, too often, sideways. We tend to be surprised when downturns hit us and treat them as the exception—and when times are good, we act as if they will never change. In this book, Mark shows us what we should always be doing to be prepared for these cycles and events in our lives in order to make the most of them. Mark tells his own story of a downturn he experienced. Then, he identifies the principles and practices that will help you discover opportunities in both good times and bad, in up and sideways years. Mark provides timely wisdom that can’t be ignored no matter where you are in your personal or professional life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Potentially Life Changing October 7, 2011
More philosophic than how-to,Up, Down, or Sideways refers to our personal economics. We will always be Up Down or Sideways and those conditions will change. If we are wealthy and well, plan for those conditions to change. Thankfully, joblessness and illness can change as well. So how can we live successfully amid life's uneven flow?

The author allows us to define our success--not always financial but often including the financial. He says success means different things to every reader. He contends that most of what happens to us is not in our control, but we can control our responses. He discusses optimism without denial and goes into the power of thinking positively without kidding ourselves.

I got into this book slowly, wondering where he was going with it, but that soon changed. I get most of my review books from Net Galley so I won't have to sort and discard later. Otherwise, books build into a paper mountain or lie sideways in the bookcase because they won't fit any longer. But I plan to buy this book and read a chapter each day until I "get" it. The "Ingredients of Love" section especially moved me and convicted me to look at my definition of caring and spotlighted the holes in it. He touches on gratitude as a mindset and persistence in getting where we want to go.

The author talks about faith, but he doesn't go into detail about his beliefs. The reader won't see CHRISTIAN in capital letters, but his words echo the lessons in the Bible. This book applies to anyone who wants a well-lived life. A potentially life-changing read.

In today's economic climate of hardship, downsizing, unemployment and government bailouts, here comes this terrific book, based on sound principles, to help us thrive. This amazing resource could have not come at a better time for the working people of America! "Up, Down or Sideways" focuses on things we should do and keep doing to be successful. The principles and lessons, presented by Mark Sanborn, are easy to understand and very useful. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to successfully navigate through difficult, unpredictable times.

4.0 out of 5 stars Facing Adversity with Success October 22, 2011
Mark Sanborn's life had taken a turn for the worst. He wasn't getting as many speaking jobs, his investments were tanking, and then to top it off, he found out he had prostate cancer. An average man would have become depressed. Not Mr. Sanborn. He decided to use these events in his life to re-focus on what was important in his life. This led him to new insights into what was truly important. He realized that thought bad things were happening to him, there were many people who have it much worse.

Mr. Sanborn decided to share what he learned during those troubled times with the world. He teaches about "good-shoulds". This is the good advice that you receive from those around you. He shares how success does not equal your net worth. Success should be measured by health, meaningful work, relationships, service, learning, and faith.

This is a really good book on how to face adversity with a positive attitude. Mr. Sanborn is relateable, as is his tale and advice. I recommend this for people going through tough times or people who just want to read an interesting book on what people do when faced with those bad times.

I received this book for free from Tyndale Blog network. I was not required to give a positive review.

Mark Sanborn's philosophies, mentality, and expertise inspired me when I read "The Fred Factor", "You Don't Need a Title to Be a Leader", and "The Encore Effect". With his new book, "Up, Down, or Sideways - How to Succeed when times are good, bad, or in between", I'm left with a feeling of a time when hope is certainly not at the forefront of the minds of many Americans and citizens of the world. Between 2008 and 2010, I lost my job twice, had to move three times to three different cities, and finally found work. I can relate to Mark's wisdom and lessons from the book, but I can't help but think that so many others like me, who have been up, down, AND sideways recently, will walk away with a feeling of HOPE and INSPIRATION from reading this book. I recommend not only reading it, but also passing it along, suggesting it to your teams, coworkers, friends, and family.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Most Important Books I've Read This Year December 7, 2011
This is a book that the father/mother, the entrepreneur, the manager, the CEO, or the frustrated job seeker would benefit from. Mark does more than encourage you to succeed in tough times, he openly shares his wisdom based on his very personal experience of struggling during tough times.

The book speaks to people feeling the pressure of the times and reminding them how important life balance is - faith, family, friends. Having started our company during these "tough times", I know that I'm guilty for pouring more of my time into my own start-up business and not enough into the other areas of my life that are even more important. This book was a gentle wake up call.

In Chapter 3, Mark shares his thoughts on how people organize their lives and their work around one of four scoring systems: results, recognition, recreation, and relationships. The insight in this chapter alone will change lives. It brings you back to what's important and helps to reshape your focus on what your priorities are in business and in your personal life.

I share Mark's philosophy of giving value first and being of service. I find it's easy to do that in business and get caught up in it, but in his book he asks questions such as "How are you serving your spouse?" "Your children?" Important questions. He asks, "What's coming into your life from other people, and what are you sending out from your life into the lives of other people?" Mark's philosophy and principles for creating and keeping connections is as important as ever, particularly in a world where we're now building online relationships using social media.

My favorite line(s) in the book are: "It's not enough to be different. Being different without being valued is being weird. Distinctive is being different and valued.
