Anyone who has lost someone they love will gain comfort from this small book on the stages of grief. It describes the stages of grief from many angles and most importantly that what one is feel ing is very normal. It is the kind of book the mourner will read and reread until acceptance and peace are found.

This is the best book for a widow, widower, or caregiver for a grieving person. It is thorough, concise, and thoughtfully written. The writers' first paragraph hit my heart with the truth of the experience of being a new widow, assuring me that I was not crazy, losing my mind, but normal. And the truth of the matter is that friends and family do not know how to support, nurture and care for a grieving widow or widower. Why they are not able to be there for one's needs is explained.

This is a great book. It was first given to me by a High School teacher when my father suddenly died. This book helps you know what your head is going to go through during the grief process. Knowing helps you to know you are not going crazy. You'll think oh, the phone's ringing, maybe it's ..... oh, yeah, they're dead. Instead of punishing yourself for such thoughts, you now know such thoughts are natural and go with it. Years ago this book went out of print and we'd hunt copies down from old book warehouses. We always keep one or two on the shelf to loan out to people. It's nice to see that this book is back in print and available. The other day I found it here on Amazon and bought three copies. A few days later a friend's father died in a freak accident, having this book on hand was no accident!

Up from Grief: Patterns of RecoveryI originally read this book in 1981. Since then I have either passed my own numerous copies to friends who have lost a loved one. I also send the book to others far away. It is well written and helps the reader to understand what is happening to them and why it is happening the way it is. The stages of grief are shock, suffering and recovery. I suggest that the reader read the introduction and the shock chapters first until the other stages are reached. Simple to understand and reads well and quick. It is a comfort to be shown what you are feeling is "normal" and you will be okay. |
