1.0 out of 5 stars This sucks
I could never figure out why this subpar band got popular, I mean sure Poets had a decent beat but this stuff sounds like "trying to hard no soul" rock which is the sucky kind. If you listen to their newer stuff which is horrid you can easily see why there was no fire behind these songs because it was a forced venture and not who they were or are.

NO is sinking, Boots or Hearts, Trickle Down... hey!!! check out Rheos Whale Music tracks...1,2,3,9,10,17

One of the best rock n' roll CDs there is. When I heard "New Orleans is Sinking" for the first time I waited for the Hip to break big in the U.S. I still don't know why that didn't happen, but after ten years plus, Up to Here has lost none of its luster. A marvelous combination of straight ahead bluesy rock with sly, heartfelt lyrics. Gord Downie's interesting vocal style blends perfectly with a rambling, imprecise guitar sound. "New Orleans is Sinking" is still one of my all-time favorite songs and I also particularly like "Blow at High Dough", "I'll Believe in You (or I'll Be Leaving You)" and the ballad "38 Years Old", but there isn't a bad song on the CD. I'm glad my local rock station played these guys for a few weeks all those years ago or I would never have heard of them and missed out on this great CD.

The Orange Duke "orangeduke" (Cupertino, Ca United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Up to Here (Audio CD)
By far the greatest album by the band some have called the U2 of Canada. They are a really a Trad Rock back, catchy muscular and invigorating and their debt to American heartland giants like Seger and Mellencamp is very evident here. The tunes on this CD are punchy and hooky, its no surprise that Blow At High Dough with its irresistible chorus was a hit in Canada, the only surprise is that it didn't hit in the US. The rest of the album is equally excellent, from the catchy anti-Reagan stomper Trickle Down to the moody, eloquent 38 Years Old (about a man who goes to jail for killing his sisters rapist, chorus is `he's 38 years old, never kissed a girl'). Other stand out tracks include `I'll Believe In You' "New Orleans Is Sinking' `She Didn't Know' and `Opiated'. Highly recommended for fans of bands like The Walking Wounded, The Rave Ups and to some extent Widespread Panic. A

5.0 out of 5 stars Late Hip converts read this!!!, July 16, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Up to Here (Audio CD)
This album is still is one of the best Hip albums around! Compared to some of their later works, such as "Fully Completely" (which is also excellent), "Up to Here" one is a bit more raw and less slick. This is not a criticism but rather a plus because there is no better driving-fast-in-your-car-with-the top-down-on-a-beautiful-summer-day kind of music around! The blues-inspired rock lays to rest the idea that the Canadian sound is just Celine Dion and folk-rock! When Gord Downie sings - and, oh, how this man can sing!!! - you will be inspired to THINK as this man is a true poet that chooses metaphors for much of what he has to say! (But if you are not a Canadian you may miss out on some of the innuendos. Sorry, oh great neighbors to the south!). The Hip is one of the best bands to watch live and this album shows them in their earlier years when they were "just" a regional phenomenon. "New Orleans is Sinking," "Blow at! ! High Dough," and "Trickle Down" are ripe with good guitar licks and driving bass and a snarling Gord Downie, and "38 Years Old" is the story about a famous jail break in Kingston (the band's hometown) and one particular go-boy's story. Get this album if you are a late Hip convert and you haven't already got it in your collection! It's worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the great ones!, March 23, 2007
This review is from: Up to Here (Audio CD)
I think for pure rock 'n roll/blues, this is one of the greatest 20 albums ever made. I bought this on cassette back in 1990, and assumed they where going to be huge. I still can't understand why they are not. It seems that everyone I know that hears this CD, loves it. I was in the military when I bought this, and for awhile, was the most dubbed tape in my unit. They must have awful marketing working for them...

I just heard this for the first time today, around 17 years after it first came out. I don't remember hearing it on the radio, it just goes to show that they weren't then and aren't now playing songs from great rock CD's like this one. I saw a movie entitled, "A Man in Uniform" in a motel in Port Angeles, WA in 1996. There are two "Tragically Hip" songs on it. It inspired me to get this and "Yer Favourites". I forgot the name of the movie but found a scrap paper where I had written it down. Funny, how we can accidentally find some great rock and roll sometimes. Ten years later I get the movie. And you know the rest of the story, only I'd like to include that this is one of the great rock and roll albums of all time, not just the 80's or 1989.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hip's Best (Possibly the Most Under-rated Album Ever), November 19, 2004
This review is from: Up to Here (Audio CD)
The Tragically Hip are the quintessential Canadian rock band, and this album is the quintessential offering from them. From the hard-driving FM classics "Blow at High Dough" and "New Orleans is Sinking" through the entire album, The Tragically Hip earn their reputation as the definitive Canadain rock and roll band. To all the Americans who have never bought into these Kingston men, they have no idea what they are missing. The live preformances of this band are electric; I have never attended a concert in which the audience was so captivated; the Hip are, in my opinion, the greatest live act in existence. Up to Here is probably their most 'straight-ahead-rock' album; the sound is not as refined as on Fully Completely, but Up to Here still refelcts a band with clear direction and killer sound. Essential for any Canadian music fan, or anyone that loves good old-fashioned rock and roll. LONG LIVE THE HIP!!!
