Up from the Mines is a book of poetry, enhanced by more than fifty photographs by Malcolm J. Wilson. This book celebrates the experience of the Appalachian coal miner. The miners' observations of nature, knowledge of history, ability to deal with adversity, awareness of their connection to a larger world, commitment to religious principle, and wonderment about how they fit into this immense universe are part of this unique book.

Mr. Goode's award-winning poetry is grounded in life experiences. He was born and educated in a coal company town. His father and grandfather were both coal miners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goode Literature, February 26, 2006
This review is from: Up from the Mines (Hardcover)
This book contains some of the most beautiful and well-written poems on the subject of coal miners and their families. James B. Goode was born and raised in Eastern Kentucky. He grew up in a mining camp because his father was a miner.

What makes Goode's poems different, is that he explores the life of a miner with a theme of family ties.

I had the honor of being a student in a literature class that Professor Goode taught. Don't miss the opportunity to read and learn from this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The pictures are amazing!!, August 31, 1999

This review is from: Up from the Mines (Hardcover)
The pictures are amazing. I do have to admit that Malcolm Wilson is my brother, but he IS a wonderful photographer. He captures the true Appalachia in a way no other artist could. I am incredibly proud of him.
