Asch, best known for his popular picture books for young children, turns the spotlight on his 13-year-old son, Devin, and Devin's friend Caleb in this chronicle of the boys' voluntary participation in the Otter Creek River cleanup project. Although the environmental theme of the book will be of interest to many middle-graders, the actual text is surprisingly lackluster and awkward, with several lame attempts at humorous dialogue that will undoubtedly sound false to readers. Still, there is a plethora of clear, colorful photographs that nicely capture the spirit of camaraderie among the volunteers, while illustrating both the flourishing wildlife and the extensive pollution that threatens its existence. Additionally, a careful reading will supply interested youngsters with ample clues about ways to organize and implement a similar activity in their own community. Lauren Peterson
