Book Description

The Center for Land Use Interpretation American Regional Landscape Series April 28, 2008
Millions of people in New York and New Jersey consider the Hudson River as familiar as their own backyard yet only have a superficial knowledge of the landscape and land use of this river's waterfront. This beautiful book deepens readers' understanding with an aerial portrait of the river’s shores from the Battery, at the southernmost tip of Manhattan, to the river's origin near Albany. Focusing on man-made sites rarely seen by those who travel along the river’s banks — some of which can only be seen aerially — the book showcases the shore area’s vanishing (or vanished) avenues, prisons, power plants, quarries, parks, condos, and redevelopments. Up River’s photos and accompanying succinct text tell the story of how this river was used in developing industry and modern America from Revolutionary times through 19th-century exploitation of the waterfront to the beginnings of environmental activism that protects famous vistas from the quarriers of the Palisades.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Aerials-Thoughtful Commentary, November 16, 2008

This review is from: Up River: Man-Made Sites of Interest on the Hudson from the Battery to Troy (The Center for Land Use Interpretation American Regional Landscape Series) (Hardcover)
Having grown up in my beloved Hudson Valley, I was anxious to see what this volume would present. Unlike most books that concentrate on the political contributions of the area, this presents an accessible accounting of the commercial and cultural aspects of development on the environment. Starting at the Battery and working up river to the Federal Dam at Troy, the major sites of interest, from estates to brickyards, are featured with an aerial photo and descriptive commentary on the facing page. While there is a perspective, I did not find it cloying or preachy. Anyone wishing to understand the impact of man on the landscape will find it fascinating. Everyone should enjoy the images.

This book has lovely photos but little in the way of detailed information about the decayed and near forgotten sites along the beautiful Hudson River that it claims to be attempting to memorialize. Try to find another if you can. Very disappointing.

The book was preselected by my son-in-law. In his thank you note, he was quite pleased with it!
