Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

From the former Senator and presidential candidate, called by some the conscience of the nation for his early anti-Vietnam War stance, a discussion of 35 years of American politics. McCarthy's account is tempered with the insights of a historian, philosopher, and citizen who is concerned for the future of the nation and its democratic political processes. As he recounts his own introduction to politics and his campaigns and terms in office, the reader has a genuine sense of being there, too. McCarthy's devotion to liberal traditions never faltered, and he made his disdain for the "club" aspects of the Senate and the superficiality of political campaigning abundantly evident. His ideas on the personalization of the presidency and the lack of national goals are powerful and poignant. A masterful work, highly recommended. Frank Kessler, Political Science Dept., Missouri Western State Coll., St. Joseph

More About the Author

In 1948 Eugene McCarthy was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served five terms. He was the first congressman to publicly challenge the vicious antiCommunist attacks of Senator Joseph McCarthy and was instrumental in the creation of the Democratic Study Group, which set forth a liberal program of action for the Democratic Party. McCarthy was a member of the famed "Class of 1958," one of 13 liberal Democrats who defeated incumbent Republicans in that year. He ran against President Lyndon Johnson in the 1969 election as an antiwar candidate, and his campaign mobilized thousands of young people across the nation, changing the face of presidential campaigns, and the Democratic Party forever.
