There are many gradations of funk, and Up From The Vaults is funk you will never hear anyplace else.
The emphasis here is not on songs, not even on singles. This compilation is comprised of longer jams, and meaner, heavier rhythms. A lot of these tracks don't even have starts and middles and ends. This is not a negative: hearing this more open-ended, experimental funk is refreshing. I can't be sure but I get the idea that a lot of these tracks were part of longer jams, some of which got cut into two part seven inches. God knows what happened to the masters. In general this material is more jazz influenced, but when it goes on the attack, look out: some of the meanest wha wha crunch I have ever heard. I keep listening to Up From The Vaults and getting the feeling I am in a basement in 1972, walking between dashikis and afros and watching an some amazing jams. This stuff was never radio ready--except for FM underground 3am, but it is so good, you have to own it Or find ALL those 45s

Especially tasty rump roaster from the people at Soul Fire. Check The Whitefield Brothers tracks for some of the juciest slabs of greasy funk you will ever want to sink your ears into. If this don't get your party started check the room for a pulse.
