Not another dry, boring SAT book!,
By Kristin (Wilmington, DE USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Up Your Score 2001-2002: The Underground Guide to the SAT (Paperback)
I teach an SAT Prep course, and I recently was thrilled when I found this book. It is totally in tune with a teenager's sense of humor. I was even laughing out loud in some instances! Even better, it is an excellent preparation tool that identifies tried and true techniques. They have updated this edition so that the jokes are new and fresh, and the writers are completely down-to-earth. They truly seem to recall what it is like to be an eleventh grader who is extremely anxious about taking this test. Additionally, it's not too long and cumbersome that it will scare away students who truly wish to up their scores; I read the book in one evening. (I wish I had read it when I was in high school!!!) It's a necessity for any college-bound high school student!

Very nice book! This book is a very concentrated book which takes strategies from all the current SAT/PSAT courses out there and binds it into one book! Very very nice for any student who wants to master the SAT! I personally raised my score 140 points after I read this book. I have have taken Kaplan, Princeton and Score Prep and this has all their strategies and more. What I loved about this book was the fact people not that much older than me wrote it and could relate to me. Very funny boook. I laughed my way to a 140 points and anybody else can do the absolute same.

Funny & Helpful,

There's one thing that separates this book from all the other SAT books -- it's written BY students FOR students. That, and you actually WANT to keep reading it. There's nothing dry and boring about this book. It's funny, it's helpful, and I give it more credit for helping me raise my Verbal & Math scores than any of the other books that I bought. I believe that the only books you really need to prepare for the SAT I are "Up Your Score" for insight on the test, tips on how to master the different types of problems, and a no-fail vocabulary builder, and "10 Real SAT's" for the practice tests. I've recommended "Up Your Score" to all my friends-- it's the only SAT book I've read that was fun to read & helpful at the same time.

Quite Humorous,

If you have to get one SAT book (but why would you? =), this is a good book to get. From the start, they say they will not produce fluffy fake questions that can be found in other books, instead they reccomend you get 10 Real SATs (which is very good advice). While most of the information in here can be found in other SAT Prep books, say the Princeton Review, this book is much more funnier than their counterparts. If you need an example, check one of the last chapters where it describes how you should bubble in those pesky circles. It also goes into fairly good detail about the SAT2 Writing test (which also means it covers the PSAT Writing Section) as well.

Invaluable,
This review is from: Up Your Score 2001-2002: The Underground Guide to the SAT (Paperback)
I used very few books to help me prepare for the SAT. In addition to the book published by the College Board with 10 practice SATs, this is the book to get. The tips on the verbal section are invaluable. Learning vocabularly and how to do analogies and reading comprehensive is fine. But the challenge for most of us taking the SAT is not knowing the meanings of words, but how to think on the SAT. The verbal section of An Underground Guide teaches you how to decipher the patterns of the verbal section. It needs to be read if you are looking for 50-100 points improvement on the verbal. If you are looking for math help, however, this book will not help you very much.

Great for SAT Prep!,

This review is from: Up Your Score 2001-2002: The Underground Guide to the SAT (Paperback)
I highly recommend Up Your Score for students trying to improve their SAT scores. It is very easy to read and extremely informative. The authors write it from a student's perspective, and include some humorous and light-hearted comments. Excellent strategies are included for sentence completions, analogies, and critical reading sections. There is also an exhaustive vocabulary list for those students willing to increase their vocabulary. The math sections are also worthwhile. Unlike other SAT prep books, this book is readable and not formidable like many other huge SAT prep books that weigh a ton! Great job done by these authors!

Glancing around your local bookstore, you won't find many entertaining sat prep books. "Up Your Score," was recommended by a teacher at my high school and I have to say that I loved it. The writers keep you awake and interested with witty remarks and making fun of the SAT in general. If you don't want to study a whole lot for the test, just read this book and you will be ready. If you are planning on studying majorly, read this before the test and it will relax you and give you helpful hints.

This book covers basic and slightly-more-advanced math, plus 600 SAT words (something the other reviews here didn't say). It also goes over the SATII Writing test with examples and methods on excelling. It has built-in study breaks and is genuinely *funny*. I loved reading it and wholly recommend it.

Goodness gracious! You can't help but smile when you read this book. I mean, I'm only a freshman, and I've only taken the SAT and PSAT once, but I think that this will be a great preparation for my taking the test in May. It is so funny! I'm planning on getting 10 Real SAT's also, but this book will do my great good, I think. After taking the PSAT, I was told that the test doesn't always reflect the SAT. Thank God! I think that with that in mind and this book, I'll be ok in May. Thanks Manek, Joe, Michael, Larry, and Paul!
