Book Description

Written for students by students, Up Your Score is the book kids will actually want to use to help them ace the test. Its four authors and guest editor—who each achieved perfect or close-to-perfect scores and got into the college of their choice—offer expert advice and proven strategies, laced with an edgy wit.

Kept sharply up-to-date by the guest editor, Up Your Score is a complement—and a reality check—to the institutional reviews by Princeton and Kaplan. It’s the book that injects attitude into the dry business of test prep, fending off the anxiety of the SAT with peer humor. A rich and lively vocabulary section is filled with examples that kids will relate to. The math section delves into the eight core ways the test covers the subject, plus offers problem-solving techniques. The writing section addresses the 13 most important grammar rules to know. And Up Your Score shows how to “psych out” the test: How to think like the SAT. How to prepare the essay in advance. The best ways to fill in answer circles and other strategies to save precious minutes. Plus, tips for maintaining concentration, why it’s always better to guess than to leave a question unanswered, what to wear on test day, and a recipe for energy-boosting Sweet & Tasty 800 Bars.

5.0 out of 5 stars I teach SAT prep November 24, 2012
Format:Paperback
I teach 2 different SAT math review courses.

A few years ago, when the original edition came out, a friend told me I needed to read this book. Recovering from surgery, I had the time, and read it.

I found that it hit just about every strategy I tell my students to use.

It's not about teaching you more math or more English, it's about the game of beating the SAT. It's all strategies that work!

In fact, I just ordered a copy for my niece.

My only criticism is that it tries so very hard, to use kid-speak. The pop references are a bit forced after a while.

But that's a minor complaint. The strategies in the book are solid, and if employed, they WILL help you improve your score.

Best of luck on the exam!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best guide for preparing to take the SAT September 12, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I tutor SAT prep and so have many SAT study guides. In my opinion, this is the best one for both students and professional tutors. It is full of expert tips and tricks (yes there are tricks to taking the SAT). Because it is funny and enjoyable to read, students don't balk at spending time on it. I combine this with The Official SAT Study Guide, 2nd edition which I use for actual practice, ignoring the "study guide" part of that book. Up Your Score's sample questions are mostly tongue in cheek so using the real tests in The Official SAT Study guide is a must.

SUMMARY
In my over 10 years of successfully helping students raise their SAT scores, this is the best study guide that I've found.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book June 3, 2013
By LAS
Format:Paperback
I ordered this book in the fall, preparing for my SAT in the spring. I thought since it was such a long book I wouldn't really have the time or patience to read all of it. However, I was very wrong. This book grabs you and actually makes you WANT to study for the test. I owe this book credit for my success and when I plan to take the SAT once again either early or mid winter, I plan to order the newest edition of this book. It helped me so much and I actually could relate to most of the allusions and references. It was definitely a fun read and believe it or not, made studying much more exciting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pumped to study! July 24, 2013
Format:Paperback
As I am preparing to take my second SAT and third ACT I have noticed this book has something that the other study materials lack, humor. Although humor won't get me to ace the test, the comedy and sarcastic remarks make studying bearable, dare I say, enjoyable. Retaining information from this book has become no problem at all! Keep in mind this material is only a supplement, giving tips and tricks and not any actual "practice", so other books will be needed. Regardless, the encouragement and the (not always) positive spin this guide places on things has me literately laughing out load and mentally psyched to take the SAT. As far as a study guide goes, I would recommend this to any test taker drowning in test prep.

3.0 out of 5 stars A great short book with the necessary tips June 28, 2014
By Huma
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book was great for learning all the tips that are usually in books like the Princeton Review. It also has a good vocabulary list that includes sentences which make learning those words easier. However, this book is only to get so high on the SAT. If you're aiming for a very high score, you need to supplement this book with books that prepare you for a higher score because this book only gives you a base.

Great vocab list inside. Pretty informal tone, but some good information. I used this as a student and now use it as an SAT tutor.
