I think it's an accurate assumption that we parents are typically the buyers of these kinds of books, and that when we hand our kids the telephone book sized prep books we've purchased the kids are hardly pleased. What a surprise it was when this book came to my house. Don't get me wrong, this is not a small book, but it has a more manageable feel and it didn't cause my son to run screaming from the room. That's already a good start from my perspective. That said, the proof is in the pudding.

I read these books too. In part, so that my kid isn't suffering alone, but mostly because I want to know how information is being presented and how I can help the process. I began to read UYS-ACT only to find that this one is different from the others out there. It's funny, approachable, and gets to the root of the situation without alienating the reader. The author and the three student contributors really feel like benevolent guides, as opposed to the cold omniscient narrators one finds in the other test prep books.

I have to say that the humor throughout this book is part of what sets it apart. Imagine your child plodding through a math problem that has stymied him/her. S/he then reads a section that is intended to illuminate said problem and instead of pulling out his/her hair with eyes glazed, s/he's smiling or even laughing. Now that moment of frustration or fatigue has lightened and his/her brain is a little clearer, ready to absorb the information needed to figure this problem out. That scenario happens again and again throughout this book. What a contrast.

I handed my 13 yr old (who is prepping for the SSAT) this book in order to read about test anxiety and how to study. And guess what, he laughed too. He also really liked the illustrations.

As a test prep tutor, I recommend this book to my students without hesitation. Arp and coauthors have put together a fun and accessible read that stands in sharp contrast to the boredom induced by a Princeton Review or Kaplan tome. The book includes general testing strategies and thorough review of the relevant academic topics, as well more detailed material on the nuances of the ACT test format. Helpful chapters on organization, planning, and stress management round out an excellent test prep resource.

We purchased the Princeton Review with DVD and Workbook during the school year and the school had some workshops. Our son took the ACT twice during the year and received scores of 19 and 21. He received a scholarship, but a score of 22 and above would make a significant difference in the amount of the scholarship. We signed him up for one more exam and the ACT for Dummies book was recommended. I purchased that but neither that or the first aid were motivating to him. In finding out the version of the Dummies book I had gotten did not have the DVD, I searched for the full version on Amazon. That brought me to this book, Up Your Score: ACT, 2014-2015 Ed: The Underground Guide. The title got my attention and I read through the reviews.

The reviews were pretty positive. What struck me was that many parents said this was the first book their child actually read! Some said the jokes were silly, but I thought if he'll read it it's worth a try. We do like to laugh! Honestly, after my son showed me the first two aids we had purchased I felt they were pretty dry and boring (and I'm a professor) though the Dummies book was a little better. I also liked the fact that this book included authors who were students who had actually taken the ACT and gotten perfect scores. So, I ordered it and we received the book the week of the exam. It was the first book that he took with him as he traveled to work. The size was convenient. Both of the other books were at least 2-1/2" to 3" thick, which would not inspire anyone to carry around!

My son is a brilliant underachiever in HS. Up Your Score ACT was suggested to him by his guidance counselor...about the best thing he recommended this summer. My sometimes-bored, always perceptive kid showed me this underground guide with the remark, "These guys--Arp, Chen, Fish and Swafford--really know what they're talking about and I think this will help boost my College prep score." I second my son's opinion, this is about the best test prep book I've seen and I know part of my son's success will be determined by how much he likes the book and how much of it he will take with him into the ACT test.

As the manager of a test prep company, I recently purchased this book. I was so impressed! I have recommended this book to all of our students and tutors. The book does an amazing job breaking down question types and content, while remaining engaging and even funny. It's unusual for test preparation books to strike a humorous tone. I've heard from my team of tutors that they've been pleased with this book because it takes a different approach to the ACT and really differs from the mainstream ACT books available. A top-notch resource for students and teachers!
