anouk unplugged,
This review is from: Update (Audio CD)
the cd update by anouk is her 5th cd what can i say she gets better and better. Alot of the songs featured here were on her last cd graduated fool but dont let that deter you from buying this little gem as songs like too long she makes this song come to life it has a totally diferent feel to it and makes it such a beautiful track with just an accoustic guitar you can hear anouks voice so crisp and clear and what a voice. There isnt a bad track on the cd.Other favorites are Margarita chum, everything, oh all of them, theres a three live tracks as well a great buy this cd will be with me for years to come.I carnt understan why she has never made it big in the U.K. as she is better than most around.

One of Anouk's finest offerings, `Update' contains acoustic versions of some of her best tracks as well as some stellar live performances (I MUST SEE HER PERFORM ONE DAY). One thing that is so great about Anouk is that she can create something so new and fresh with just her personal touches added to her already established work, so while we've heard these songs before already it never feels like rehashed territory.
Each and every song is its own song, separate from its original source. Songs like `Margarita Chum' and `Stop Thinking' lend themselves effortlessly to the acoustic variations, and so their superb quality is not surprising. What is surprising is the beautiful way in which songs like `Everything' and `Who Cares' transfer. In fact, `Everything' is so good I'm almost tempted to say that the acoustic version is better than the original. `Who Cares' opens the album on a great note, taking us into the world of Anouk with enough tender power that we know this is going to be a rewarding ride. I have always loved her voice in this song, the way she allows the melody to kind of take her to this creation of a seemingly dark sting in her words strung throughout the verses (very Jim Croce) and then bouncing into this almost whimsical carefree delivery of the choruses. The original is outstanding, but the acoustic version is even better, especially during the breakdown at the end ("I want to try"). And like I said, `Everything' is just AMAZING. I really love the original, which showcases Anouk's rocker edge on a track that sounds as if it could have come from any high-profile rock band out there today; it's that good. This version adds another feel to the song, creating something that feels more `Anouk' to me, layers of raw intensity dripping from each guitar strum. I love how songs that I was initially on the fence with, like `Too Long', get a makeover with an acoustic version that makes me just look at them differently; in a good way. I remember that the original version of this track was one of my least favorite tracks on `Graduated Fool' and yet this is such a superb rendition of the song; soft, delicate and moving. Her voice is just GODLIKE. `Stop Thinking' is one of my favorite tracks on the album. It's a stellar song of quiet desperation, and Anouk's soulful voice just sinks right into each word gloriously. `Margarita Chum' has always been one of my favorite songs by Anouk, and this acoustic version just sours above the original. She should ONLY put out acoustic music because there is something about the rawness of the sound of the guitar that meshes so perfectly with the rawness of her voice. Perfect fit; seriously. The beautiful `Michel' makes an appearance here in the form of a live track and it is sublime, really...such a tremendously fantastic song and it is surely one of her finest songs and one of the best of all time; easily. I'm tempted to say it's better than `Lost'; tempted. `Hail' is also here in the form of a live track. I would have loved to hear this one done acoustic, because it just has the perfect structure for it, but the live version is stellar so no complaints. I love her vocal depth on this track; spine-chilling. `It Wasn't Me' is a touching song about, what I gather must be, her father. If not her father then it is a very personal rendering of the after affects of someone's father leaving them. It's about abandonment and the pain that is left in the hearts of the abandoned. Anouk wonders if this man thinks about what he's done or if he just shrugs it off without a care. It's very powerful, and her delivery is nothing short of moving. I get the feeling that `Between These Walls' is about similar situation, which leads me to conclude that this has to be about `her' father. The song is flawless. It reminds me of a Maroon 5 song; that calm coolness that transcends the musical arrangement and becomes a part of the listener. The only below perfect tracks here come in the form of `Searching' and `Wait and See'. By `below perfect' I by no means mean `bad'. These tracks are still pretty good; they just don't have the impact the rest of the album has. I'm not too much of a fan of `Searching' so I was kind of let down that it appears here twice; as an acoustic track and as a live track. The acoustic version is better, but neither of them is noteworthy. `Wait and See' is a better song, but again, it just lacks that something. In the end the album is far beyond what most artists offer today and is highly, highly recommended. Embrace Anouk, because she is one of the best things that has ever (and I mean EVER) happened to music.
