This is a great strainer for a fraction of the cost of the more well known Matfer brand. When I use it to make chicken stock, I no longer need to use cheesecloth. In fact, I can usually do just 1 pass through this bouillon strainer and I'm good to go. Nothing escapes through the extra-fine mesh & with little to no sediment. I also use it to strain homemade yogurt to make a thicker Greek style texture. Just be sure to rinse/wash it immediately to be sure the mesh remains open, especially at the narrow bottom where it's harder to clean. It's a large size & odd shape so storage is a bit awkward. I have mine hanging on a hook over the sink. If you like to make stocks or broths from scratch, or homemade yogurt, you need this essential tool.

I purchased this strainer for use in stock making where it performed quite well. I first used a regular mesh strainer to remove the larger bits and then proceeded with the extra fine strainer perched over a 12qt stock pot. I gave a final pass with this item laced with a good double-folded cheese cloth. The cheese cloth didn't actually catch much, that's how well this extra fine strainer performed. My stock was beautiful and, to my tired eyes, clear. Recommended.

Tried cheese cloth and hated the mess. Bought this strainer to make greek yogurt. Works great. Be sure to refrigerate the yogurt for about 4 hours before using strainer. Love it!

Surprisingly lightweight and more delicate compared to the pro-level, robust, carbon-fiber reinforced $100.00+ french strainers out there. If you need that kind of quality and even finer mesh for consommés, you already know it and shouldn't be wasting your time with this semi-pro model. If you don't need that kind of strainer but think you're better off with one, be advised that the finer the mesh and the more support rods around it, the harder one of these can be to clean and maintain. Those pro strainers represent an outsized investment if if you're not using one every few days, IMHO. You could own three of these for the price of just one of those heavy duty models.

For passing soups, stews or a pot roast through, making stocks, or straining yogurt for a recipe, this is perfectly good strainer and should last years using a little care. I'd recommend straining large beef, veal or pork bones in two batches instead of one. I caution against putting any tool like this in the dishwasher; you're better off soaking the bottom half of it in very hot water and a mild detergent, then use a plastic or natural bristle brush to dislodge particles.

Note: The model I received has a slightly more bulbous mesh shape than depicted here, and the bottom is flattened out a bit instead of being conical and pointy. I find the design useful.

Works very well for making greek yogurt; the yogurt peeled off the sides nicely when it was done draining. Cleaning it is easier than mesh strainers. Great for straining broth, too. Would like a slightly smaller and shallower version for the yogurt. Picture is incorrect, as others have noted.

I bought this so I could strain my soup stock. It works great, and cleans easily. It is rather large, so storage is a problem (I live in a condo with limited space). You need a very large pot to hold this as it is rather tall.

The product that arrived is not as pictured. The product that I received is not as truly conical as the picture. It has a more rounded shape. The constructions feels a little flimsy, but it is all metal and good enough.

I use it primarily for straining stock and it cleans easily. Perhaps the rounded shape has something to do with that, but I don't know.

I like it. It works well and is good enough for my purposes.
