First of all, I look at reviews and all of the very favorable reviews and comments for this knife were from people who obviously cook for a living. As a former cook, I found that impressive. The knife arrived very sharp. It's also easy to keep its edge using a regular steel. As someone pointed out in a comment, the tang extends about two thirds into the handle. The knife has great balance and I have found it perfect for cutting vegetables, including julienning and dicing.

The steel is soft enough to scratch with a scotchbrite pad. I'm not sure I'd wash this in a dishwasher, but I handwash all my knives anyway so that isn't an issue for me.

I've been enjoying this knife a lot, and at the price I paid it's a great deal. Very happy I bought it!

Excellent knife. Takes a razor edge. My new go to knife in the kitchen for just about everything. Comfortable to hold.

I work in a professional kitchen and work with Update products regularly, as well as others that are intended to be affordable, quality tools, and this is not exactly that. For the money, this knife is okay, but there are many imperfections. The steel is not a high carbon steel blade; It is a pure stainless. Pure stainless does not take a super fine edge like carbon or damascus steel will. Yes, damascus steel is an unfair comparison, but carbon steel certainly isn't, considering you can get a chinese vegetable cleaver for less than the price of this knife. It was not sharp out of the box. There was no box, rather a plastic package and a major imperfection in the blade. The tang extends half way into the handle, which is okay, and I do like solid feel of the handle, though there were burrs in the material right out of the package.

All in all, this like most Update products, seems like a knife destined for a professional kitchen that will get abused, banged into other utensils, dropped, ran through the dishwasher, etc, and probably stand up to it, but it is by no means a fine piece of cutlery, even without the major imperfection found in this one's blade. If that's how you treat your knives, then this might be a good buy for $20 to put in your home kitchen.
