Calling Updike a "major stylist," Bloom takes a look at this contemporary writer. This title by Bloom examines Updike's "A & P," "Ace in the Hole," "Flight," "Pigeon Feathers," and "Packed Dirt, Churchgoing, A Dying Cat, A Traded Car."

This title also features a biography of John Updike, a user guide, a detailed thematic analysis of each short story, a list of characters in each story, a complete bibliography of Updike’s works, an index of themes and ideas, and editor’s notes and introduction by Harold Bloom.

This series, Bloom’s Major Short Story Writers, is edited by Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities, Yale University; Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Professor of English, New York University Graduate School; preeminent literary critic of our time. The world’s most prominent writers of short stories are covered in one series with expert analysis by Bloom and other critics. These titles contain a wealth of information on the writers and short stories that are most commonly read in high schools, colleges, and universities.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-After several pages of biographical information on the distinguished author, this book focuses on five of his short stories: "A & P"; "Ace in the Hole"; "Flight"; "Pigeon Feathers"; and "Packed Dirt, Churchgoing, A Dying Cat, A Traded Car." A plot summary, a list of characters, and at least six analyses by known critics are provided for each selection. When applicable, comparisons among Updike's works are made. In addition, the writer's comments on "Pigeon Feathers" excerpted from his memoir, Self-Consciousness (Knopf, 1989), are among the critical essays for that story. This volume, while limited in focus, will be useful for students who need clarification and additional information on Updike's shorter works.-Pat Bender, The Shipley School, Bryn Mawr, PA
